my son would come with me to “help” feed the steer we was fattening up.
told him “got make sure he’s good and healthy so hel taste right”
from that day forward, my boys made sure i never forgot to go feed him.

5 years old when I went hunting with my great uncle. Yes let me cut the heart out. Didn't take a bite of it. Saved it for my father.

I’ve always told my kids where meat comes from. It doesn’t seem to phase them. I even showed my 4-year-old a pig at a pig roast once. I wasn’t sure how he would take it since you can really see the pig mouth and ears. He took one look and said, “Mmm...bacon.” Just give your kid a slice of bacon right before you explain things.

I said Tyson is a company in Georgia that has a big chicken farm. I paused. I went for it. I said Tyson makes chicken nuggets out of the chickens.
He didn’t seem bothered by it. I don’t think he fully comprehends what that means.
I’m willing to bet that’s every 3 year old ever.

It wasn't too long ago in human history that every child at a young age would have been exposed to the actual slaughtering of the animals on the farm.
Do the lambs still cry out to you Clarice?

Kids are more resilient than you think. Tell him what it is, I promise he won't be scarred for life.

Interesting question. Since my child’s birth I’ve brought dead fish, birds, and mammals home. He has seen them gutted, cleaned, and cooked. Never had to explain. Fried deer blackstrap in my house might even trump tooth fairy on the excitement level.

Three words: circle of life.

We've always just been very frank and casual with our kids.
"Yes, this is duck. You know those little yellow birds in your book? Well, sometimes we eat them."
Usually after they eat some, so the response is always something like, "I like duck!"
We also let our 3 year old "save a crawfish" before we dump the rest in boiling water.
I don't think there is a need to sugarcoat it. We are humans. We eat some animals. "No, we don't eat dogs and cats" has been said to our oldest as well.
Don't complicate the basics. If they want to be tree hugging PETA members when they grow up, well, I'll do like any self respecting father and kill myself.

When I was four I watched my grandfather wring a chicken's neck for Sunday dinner. I turned out fine.

Your child is going to grow up retarded and scream at the sky.
Congratulations, Father of the Day.

Is this what parenting has come to? People helicopter their kids from everything?

Dinosaurs, what else... Isn't Tyson based in Arkansas..?

By three years old my kids had seen enough dead ducks, deer, and fish to sink s boat

my son grew up hearing me use the phrase "fried dead animal"

Made beef tips and rice out of some deer backstrap I harvested last season. Son asked what it was and I told him he was eating Bambi, my son didn't seem fazed by it, wife was a little pissed though.

Give him a knife and a chicken and tell him he needs to make his own nuggets.
