I'm guessing it was from the deck right below the safety boats.Pretty much the only deck you could fall from and not hit the ship on the way down. Railing is not very high there.
Yeah it gets windy asf. Dad puts kid on railing and the wind catches.
Good on him for diving over and for whoever notices and alerted the crew. Nightmare.

Lardass float easy in salt water. But this dude was also holding a child while treading.

treading water for 20 minutes
It's only hard for lardasses that frequent the buffet on cruises.
I'm north of 280 and sink like a stone if I stop treading water... But I don't see why the 20 minutes thing is impressive.
We've pulled over on the river for hours and while the women folk float around on tubes or rafts, I've never not just treaded water. While drinking.
Can most people not just tread water without thinking about it?

Treading water in the ocean in the wake of a cruise ship is not the same as treading water in a calm creek/river/lake on the weekend around dozens of your closest acquaintances.

What a badass dad. The world needs more men like him

Went down this YouTube rabbit hole…fall off a moving ship like that and your odds are not great.
If you see someone fall in the water do not stop staring at them while yelling for help. Good chance you won’t be able to spot them again if you look away.
Scary shite.

As others have mentioned this isn’t a lake. Even Rolling 2-3 footers that break over your head prevent the ability to save energy as most have been taught because you are having to constantly work to keep the salt water out of your eyes and mouth. And doing the same for a child.

The brave father, who had been treading water for about 20 minutes, and his daughter were found by the lifeboat within just 3 to 5 minutes.
Was not expecting this result.

Almost guarantee they set the kid up on the railing for a photo.

Kudos to the Dad, and thankfully this had a happy ending. But anyone should be able to tread water for a long time, and the depth doesn’t matter. Most of these incidents end in tragedy by virtue of how hard it is for a cruise ship to locate someone that has gone in the water.
Holding a potentially drowning kid makes this more difficult. Drowning humans will grab on anything.

But did he also fail to provide adequate supervision resulting in his child going over? This doesn't happen often does it?
Sometimes shite can and will happen.

Yeah, you might think you could...but you wouldn't last 15 minutes, which makes this story impressive
Maybe, maybe not. At least he wouldn't have to live with the hellish guilt of not doing anything which would probably drive you to take yourself out anyway.

Some initial reports are stating that the father had placed the child on the railing to take a picture, but we are still gathering information before these reports can be substantiated.
One comment on social media stated, “From bystanders he was holding her on the railing they were taking pictures.”

NPS employees say that several people die every year trying to get a picture.
My kids were little when we went to the Grand Canyon. I was hypervigilant. I had hands or eyes on them every second.
After dinner, I went out to run and enjoyed the view.
