He should quit & make her scramble to hire someone
just to show the city how incompetent she is
quote:
Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome told the Baton Rouge Press Club on Monday that the International Association of Chiefs of Police will help her search for a new police chief and that she still has not received transition committee reports her office previously said she received a month ago.
quote:
The mayor pledged along the campaign trail to replace Dabadie, but has run into hurdles navigating state civil service laws, which protect his job. She would not say Monday whether he has agreed to step down.

Dabadie doesn't have to go anywhere. That's the beauty of civil service. He is gonna have to either truly be found a detriment to the city to be fired or she is gonna have to pay him a ton of money.
I realize he doesn't and like I said I don't believe he's done a bad job or anything wrong.
I just believe the Chief of Police shouldn't be covered by Civil Service and should be like the CAO or any of the other department heads there at the pleasure of the mayor.
Think about the other side of things. What if Broome appointed a chief, he was someone you considered a good chief and needed to be replace, and you were the mayor elected to replace her; wouldn't you want to pick your own chief???
quote:
So really Dabadie has the best hand in this game right now
No doubt, but shouldn't the mayor, the city, and the citizens have the best hand to play and not the chief?
Like I previously posted, its nothing against Dabadie, and I didn't vote Broome; but unless someone here can change my mind; I don't want the Chief of Police covered by civil service.

Baton Rouge has some stupid fricking people making decisions for this city.
She is no different than Gary Chambers and shares the same agenda.

I have nothing against Dabadie. He has played the cards he was dealt, but I do he should serve at Broome's discretion as Chief, and be allowed to return to his former position.
If Broome and company could come up with a well thought out set of reasons why he should resign and then present this to the community then we can discuss.. her basic reasoning at this point is that she wants to put her person in and that she should have that right.. That type of thinking is exactly what leads to political meddling and corruption.. When his time is up and he chooses to retire or is found in violation of his employement, she will have an opportunity to put her guy in place.

Take Broome out of the equation, take Dabadie out of the equation, and put yourself in as mayor.
You pick all the department heads, but you can't pick the Chief of Police??? It makes no sense to me.
Yes, I see some merit of having a chief that is above the fray, he is a career guy, etc.; but how is he hired? Isn't somewhat political?
Aren't there national searches, a test, etc.? We don't just choose guys from the ranks, right?
If the Mayor is going to hire the chief, then it has to be political. What am I missing?

Yup, she wants her black guy in because he's black and he's her guy. She doesn't want to reduce crime, and cannot find any fault in Dabadie

What you're asking us to do is take everything out but you haven't acknowledged the biggest issue: civil service rules.
Those rules weren't put in place by Dabadie, or even Kip. But regardless of who or when they were put in, you can't just skip over or do as you please under the City Parish Government governing policy when those rules regarding employees are in place.
You don't like them? Then work to change them. But don't just stomp your foot. In reality, it makes the Mayor-and all of those who ran saying the same thing about the Chief-look foolish that they campaigned with a plank about replacing the chief of Police but clearly did so little homework and research about the position and the rules its governed-and in this case protected-by that they didn't know they couldn't just snap a finger or issue a memo to get it done.
To me, it shows amateurism and lack of understanding as a candidate. Which-if you aspire politically to run a political subdivision and you campaign about how you're going to run it while clearly not understanding how it operates, that's a poor showing on your part.
Beyond that, it shows that the people who DID put those Civil Service protections in place over the Chief of Police felt the need to do so to protect against political whims of those in positions of executive power in the City Parish.
Which seems to be EXACTLY what the current Mayor was doing or feeling when she and others campaigned on Dabadie being replaced.
You can't just set aside the rules, policies and procedures that govern the City Parish. You can ignore them, but it will just make you look foolish.
Which is exactly what the mayor and the candidates that said the same thing as well as current local politicians look like in reality regarding this entire ridiculous spectacle.

This is how all this is about to go down.
Chief won't resign, so the mayor will have to pay him to leave because she can't fire him for doing nothing wrong.
Mayor will bring the request to remove him and pay him the metro council.
The reasonable counsel members will vote against it because there is no reason to remove him and incur a financial burden on the parish.
The others will vote for it because Ideology trumps reason for them.
Those who want him out will then say the counsel is racist and promote that message to their constituents.
(points finger at own nose)
Exactly.
Huge dog & pony show.

This dumb arse basically says he has done a good job but needs to retire b/c the new mayor said she would replace him
Imagine how this would go if a white mayor was elected and a white councilmen wrote this letter wanting the black police chief to resign.

I mentioned civil service rules in my original post, and said I didn't think the chief should be covered.
It's JMO, and I know in the present situation he is, and that isn't changing and again; I think it needs to be changed.

You are just repeating the same thing over and over.
I agree, the rules are clear, I agree, Dabadie is covered by the rules, what I want is the rules changed so that the Mayor is allowed to pick the chief.
That can't be done overnight, but I'd hope by the next election the change could be put into place.
My suggestion is a long term one, and really doesn't matter right now. The situation can't be changed overnite and like everyone else, I'm waiting to see what Broome does.

what a dumb bitch.
She is 100% correct, though.
The new Mayor should be given the opportunity to appoint a new CoP.
Is the police Chief's position actually protected under the civil Service commission? In NOLA chief serves at did creation of the mayor, if I am not mistaken.

So we agree that nothing can be done, regardless of what you or the Mayor/President think unless either of you tries to work within the system for change.
As opposed to blustering and blathering nonsense that has no basis in reality? Which is what was done both during the campaign and up until this very moment in this thread.

This is my 2nd post in this thread. That was also the first time I ever posted what I posted. If it seems repetitive, perhaps its because the redundancy of the argument on the opposite end of the discussion makes me feel the need to reiterate myself.

So we agree. It took you all that time to get to the point where you admit I'm right and that you're in agreement with me? Geezus I feel like I'm getting a tooth extracted.
quote:

I agree with you. I think that's far more worthy of a discussion in the public eye and a conversation to begin to have with the electorate and her constituency. Rather than the totally, utterly and completely meaningless one that's been bandied about so far.
Which is my entire point. If you want to talk about being a progressive, inclusive candidate and ultimately office-holder, then talk about subjects and campaign issues in a meaningful, progressive, inclusive way that recognizes the angles and issues impacting the things you feel are important.
Which she's done the exact opposite of for almost the entire time she's been a candidate and mayor.

The chief of police should be an elected position just like the sheriff

makes sense to me.....regardless its a bad look that the mayor wasn't even aware of this policy before taking office. That or she knew damn well but used it as a talking point to help her win the black vote.

That's where you're wrong. It's most definitely about race. She wants a black police chief who can sympathize with the "plight" of the young black men who are committing the majority of the crime in BR.
The problem is that she her "hug-a-thug" type of policing doesn't work. She wants to remove a sitting police chief under whom crime has actually gone down, and replace him with a puppet she can use to appease people like Gary Chambers and C. Denise Marcelle.

LeDuff was a great Chief, he didn't cut criminals any slack.
I don't think any cop that cares about what the badge stands for will go along with her agenda
IMO if a new Chief is hired & he institutes policies based on SWB & people like FGC's type of policing then he isn't there because he cares about the job or the community, just the title

You are so, so wrong. There are so many politicians masquerading as law enforcement people out there that it would make your head swim. To rise to that level in any decent sized agency you have to start playing the game early in your career. It isn't like they go find some shite hot street cop with ten years on the job and make him Chief. These are all people who do some time on the street and then aspire to positions of rank. Some for the right reasons but most because they either can't hack it on the street or secretly wish to lord over others. Ask any cop and they will tell you this.
