Charter Communications has agreed to merge with Cox Communications in a $34.5 billion deal that will combine two of the top three cable companies in the U.S.

Cox is the third-largest cable television company in the country, with more than 6.5 million digital cable, internet, telephone, and home security customers. It has a strong foothold in states spanning from California to Virginia. Charter Communications, known more widely as Spectrum, has more than 32 million customers in 41 states.

The cable industry has been under assault for years from streaming services like Disney, Netflix, Amazon and HBO Max, as well as internet plans offered by mobile phone companies. Comcast, which is of nearly equal size to Charter, spun off many of its cable television networks in November as as consumers increasingly swap out their cable TV subscriptions for streaming platforms.

So-called "cord cutting" has cost the industry millions of customers and left them searching for ways to successfully compete.

Charter said Friday that it will acquire Cox Communications' commercial fiber and managed IT and cloud businesses. Cox Enterprises will contribute Cox Communications' residential cable business to Charter Holdings, an existing subsidiary partnership of Charter.

This is like an Altima and a Yugo had a corporate baby that alleged itself to be in the cable/IT business.

My cox service has been going out randomly the past 2 weeks.

Yesterday it went out around 4PM. Was still out when I left the house a little after 7PM.. But when I got back home right before 10 it was on. Crossing fingers it doesn't go out today. Will this deal help that?

Charter- Spectrum(internet) is way more stable than any ATT product at least on the Northshore.

This shouldn't effect infrastructure in the short term but will worry about the rates getting jacked up.

I saw they are going to eventually, within a year of merger, start using the Cox name.

How bloody awful of a reputation does the Charter / Spectrum name have that they are willingly going to adopt the Cox name??

Had random outages last year that evolved into daily at certain times. The repair guy replaced a circuit board that was aging and would overheat till shutdown then start working again once cooled down.

It will never be done in time.

Also, how will this affect crawfish prices?

Cox is probably the more stable name with name recognition. Charter/Spectrum changes its name every so many years. I remember when it was called Renaissance cable, Vision Cable, Brighthouse, Time Warner, etc. Major Cable companies have acquired new markets and spun off others to different providers to keep the regulators happy. This will unify a lot of the New Orleans cable market with one cable provider providing service from parts of Terrebonne, northern Lafourche, St. Charles, Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, Tangipahoa, and St. Tammany with one Cable provider.

Charter mainly feeds its services from an office in Slidell near the dreaded 51 Railroad overpass. That could move to New Orleans proper when they combine the systems.

They are more stable nationwide. I have had Charter in multiple states and never had a problem. I have had Cox here in Louisiana and there is a problem at least 1 time a month. And the Cox customer service is waaaaaay worse than Charter/Spectrum.
