You run a business, not a charity. As long as you explain the fee upfront, I see no issue.

Just do an analysis using the frequency of cancelations, and the impact it'd have on your business (assume a % of cancelation that will result in loss of business)

With you not saying shite about what kind of business you run, how are people supposed to know? That'll dictate whether or not it's a good idea in general

I’d rather someone like a doctor’s office charge a cancellation fee then overbook to make up for missed appointments.

A reservation is essentially reserving your time with someone. People’s time is worth a lot, if you cancel and waste their time there should be a penalty.

I won't go to any doctor who does this bullshite. Only way this is justified is if they give a discount if the doctor has to change your appointment or you have to wait longer than 30 minutes past your appointed time.

Hard to say for sure without knowing your field, but I'd probably give first-time offenders a waiver (telling them so) and then enforce the no-show policy.

In my office when a patient no shows we call them and show legitimate concern for their well being as to why they missed their appointment. When they give their excuse, Sick, called into work etc. we gently remind them that we would appreciate a 24 hour notice on a cancelled appointment so that another patient can be booked in their time slot. If it happens a second time then they are told very politely that in order to secure a future appointment they are required to prepay for said appointment.

charging a no show fee is the best way to get rid of a troublesome client.

Even better what about these types of fees at a restaurant

Sushi Hayakawa in Atlanta reservation policy

quote:

Deposits to secure your reservation at our sushi counter and at a private table are $48.64 and $24.32 respectively. Each of these reservations includes the cost of the deposit, a 20% gratuity for your server, and the applicable tax as mandated by the state of Georgia.
quote:

We do not provide refunds for reservations. However, we gladly help you reschedule your reservation up to 48-hours ahead of your planned visit.
quote:

In the event that you are unable to bring your full party to the dinner that evening, please be advised that we have a no-show fee of 55 per seat at a private table and 75 at the sushi counter. This fee is added at the time of service and is not covered by the deposit.

This or something similar is reasonable. If they want to reschedule right then over paying the fee then ok but if they burn you again, theyre done.

It’s only reasonable if they meet their appointment times, otherwise it is not. My dentist meets his appointment times and does not charge a fee for cancelation.

If my doctor tried to charge me a cancellation fee, I would get another doctor. My time is valuable to me, got OT business to take care of

I run a fishing charter service. I get a deposit for my trips, usually half the final fee.

If they cancel on me at the last second, they lose their deposit and pay the remaining fee if they cancel on the same day. If not, they wont book anymore trips with me

I'm only ok with this if the business is ALWAYS prompt with their services commencing upon scheduled appointment time.

exactly.
Don't tell me to be on time, and punish me for it, if you can't be on time.
My time is worth money too. I don't enjoy making an appointment at 10am, but i don't see the doctor until 10:40 after i've been waiting for almost an hour. I don't care what you had going on or why you were late, you were late, and i got shite to do too. What it boils down to is i took about an hour and a half to 2 hours out of my day, to talk to a doctor for probably 2-3 minutes.

I also don't like making an appointment to get an oil change or fix a tire or something, and it taking over 2 hours to do so. What the frick was the point of the appointment? It's a 15 minute repair, not 3 hours.

People are so disrespectful of others time.

If you don’t plan to show for an appointment, just freaking call and say you won’t be coming

I make it up. Labor cost more, a part cost more. Something. If they schedule me and don't answer my call and I go there, I make up the amount on the next time.

Last year my mom needed to see an eye specialist that was on her medical, not vision, insurance. She makes the appointment and they collect her co-pay over the phone as a "deposit" and tell her she will forfeit if she cancels with less than 24 hours notice or no-shows. If she shows up, then her co-pay is already paid.

She asked me to drive her so I did.

Appt was for 1030 I believe. She legit gets called back at 1145 am. I overheard a couple of nurses / assistants discussing that the doc didn't show up until 945 am, when first appt was at 9 am.

If you make a 10 am appt and 25 people walk in at 9 am, they aren't getting turned away. Your appt doesn't mean shite.

Ultimately, by canceling they are taking the spot of someone who wants to be seen and it ends up costing me money in the long run.

Do you refund the cancellation fee if you are able to fill that appointment spot?

Your most valuable asset is time. If they waste it, they have to pay.
