How do those who run a business handle this? I feel that I must enforce the fees if they cancel after confirming. When I don't, those very people take advantage of my generosity and expect me to wave it every time. Those who I've waived in the past have tended to be the most unreliable. However, when I do enforce if, I feel sleazy especially when they address the fact that I charge them. Ultimately, by canceling they are taking the spot of someone who wants to be seen and it ends up costing me money in the long run.

All depends on the type of business, loyalty of the customer, and the demand of your services.

This is pretty much the same post i see the hair cut folks make on social media.

If you can get people to actually give you a credit card number prior to showing up, i would be amazed.

I hope you're not a doctor or dentist because this would quite a ballsy complaint considering most here have probably had multiple experiences with waiting well beyond their appointment time before being called back to be seen by their doctor or dentist.

You give a credit if you're late?

My dentist in BR charges a cancelation fee if it’s within 24hrs.

This or something similar is reasonable. If they want to reschedule right then over paying the fee then ok but if they burn you again, theyre done.

You’re not charging a no show fee, they are surrendering a non refundable fee to secure the appointment.

Way I see it as a customer is that if I get charged a no show fee for a late cancellation, they lose my business. So if $25 is worth losing however many hundreds (or thousands if it’s the medical field), then go ahead.

But then again, I’ve never had to be a last minute cancellation.

Your business is a two way street. When an appointment it made you're guaranteeing a service and your time, while they are guaranteeing your payment. If they cancel without giving you sufficient notice, your time and/or resources are still used.

Explain this to your customers up front, and mention that's why your cancellation policy is X days. They will understand. Trashy people will still complain after the fact, but trashy people will always be a problem in one way or another.

I'm only ok with this if the business is ALWAYS prompt with their services commencing upon scheduled appointment time.

And I would be fine to lose your business just as anyone in the medical field would.

It’s worth $25 to get rid of a non compliant patient. And it is never a loss of hundreds or thousands because there is always another patient willing to take your spot.

Medicine, unlike most other business models, has a finite number of people we can serve.

You lost $$ why should you lose money? They took money from you as you couldve sold that hour to a paying customer.

I don’t agree with this line of thought ( not that anyone cares). My MD never runs more than an hour behind. His “no show” policy is a charge if the patient doesn’t call/email the office within 2 hours of the appointment. I think this is a fair tradeoff.
