when I drove limo, one of the pin-head kids cross threaded the oil drain plug resulting in a loss of oil.
you couldn't PAY me to go to one of them places....
Don't ding
It doesn't take a lot but when that screw drain is messed up you're in a mess.

I also know that when I do it, it's been done right and no corners were cut.
I've done some things on my car where I am not so sure they were done right. Close the hood and think to myself, "Man, I hope I did that right. Guess we'll find out."

I used to do it, but now I'd rather pay $60 than spend $25-$30 and do it myself.

I change mine, and do all the maintenance and most of the work on them. It's not so much to avoid the hassle, but to be sure it's done right. After a couple of bad experiences that turned into much larger costs and frustration, I will do it myself until I'm physically incapable.

Used to do my own, also. The minor hassle greatly outweighed driving to a shop and sitting around. The dealership does it now for free. This is pretty clutch considering I hear diesel oil changes can get up to around $100 even if you do it yourself.

I don't find it a hassle at all. Takes all of five minutes actual work. Of course, I let it drain longer than that, so twenty minutes start to finish. Plus I know that I put in quality oil and used a genuine Toyota filter. And that my drain plug is tight and not stripped.

Same here.
It is not about saving a few bucks. Changing your own oil allows you to monitor the current condition of the engine by looking at the consistency and the volume of oil that drains out vs the volume needed to fill it to capacity.
I do every bit of maintenance on my cars and keep the records on an spreadsheet to make sure everything is in top working order.
When a shop hires a new high school dropout, they let him sweep the shop for a few weeks and then the let him change YOUR oil. Not mine.

Had my oil changed today. Took 20 minutes and they checked all my fluids and did an inspection sticker...no hassle at all...pretty convenient.

Do all my own maintenance and repairs if I can help it. I know I can order the right parts, install them correctly, and know exactly what was done. Not a hassle and I don't risk some grease-monkey tanking an impact wrench to something they shouldn't.

Hassle?
It takes like 15 minutes once every 3 or 4 months
It may not take much time, but is is a mess and then you still have to dispose of the oil. That is the real hassle. I'd bet a bunch of the "change your own oil" folks just dump that shite in their yard though.

We take it back to any of the thousands of places that take the stuff. Generally the same place we buy the oil in the first place.
Posted on 8/1/15 at 8:31 pm to ULSU
I pour the used oil in the jug the new oil came out of and drop it off at the auto parts store.

You never spill any? What do you then do with the jug of dirty oil? You put it in the car and drive it somewhere. All in all, takes more time than my Napa shop.

I have a 5 galllon bucket in my shed for used oil. When that gets full I bring the whole thing in.

So? Some people are fine spending a little more time to see a job done right. We aren't the ones stranded on the side of the road because of a cross-threaded drain plug or a loose one or the new oil was never even put in...

Sounds like a lot of guys on here have tried it once and struggled and said frick it.
If you do it a few times and get your process down, accumulate the few tools you need to do it properly and easily, it only takes a few minutes and your done. No waiting, no hassle - fifteen minutes start to finish tops.
Beats the frick out of having to bring it somewhere to get a man to do something you should be doing as a man and also have to deal with all the shite-heads.

The last few times I've taken my car in to get serviced, it's taken 45 minutes to an hour to get my oil changed a
$32 for full synthetic oil and filter. I can change mine in about 15 mins. I've never taken a vehicle I own to an oil change place.
