re: Changing Your Own Oil to Avoid the Hassle?

I always go to the dealer for oil changes. OEM filters and name-brand oil. The intervals are so long now, it's not that much more, cost-wise.
The cheap places use crappy oil and cheap, bulk filters.

Same way here. I like doing my inspection every time I change my oil.
I also have never been to a mechanic before. If I blow my transmission or engine, I can rebuild it myself.
Working on cars used to be a hobby of mine.
I enjoy working on my car same way people like washing theirs. I pay for car washes not maintenance.

The dealership is like $250 for my car. $50 if I change it myself with OEM filter and Castrol 0w40. Since my car has 170k, I do it every 7k-8k, which I reach quicker than I'd like.

Makes sense. If I was putting a ton of miles on, I'd probably do the same.
Your car calls for 40w?

I'm torn in it to be honest. I've got the money but I'm frugal. I hadn't changed my own oil in well over 25 years until I got my latest vehicle. Jiffy lube charges $125 to do it
I drive a lot so every 10,000 is only every 10 weeks or so, and the SUV is low to the ground with horribly inaccessible filter.......you get messy as heck doing it and it's tough to get the filter off. But saving $95 every 10 weeks.......

It calls for anything that is LL-01 approved. I've tried Mobil 5w30, Catrol 0w30, and Castrol 0w40. The 0w40 seems to run the best in my aging car, in my lay opinion.

live about 6 miles from the nearest oil change place. Would take about 10 minutes each way to drive there. Takes me less time and energy to do it at home.

I always change my own oil. I do it early on a Saturday or Sunday morning and takes all of 10 or 15 minuts and then I'm free to do whatever. I know it's done right with a full synthetic oil and a good filter without hassle from a bunch a salesmen trying to up sell me.

Yeah, is anyone in this thread discussing used oil disposal? How much time and effort for that?

I'm guessing most that live in the country just dump it somewhere

Don't do this. Recycle and by the oil and filter for next oil change,

Take your vehicle to the dealer for oil change. Odds are :
-price will be the about the same, or less than these oil change places who thrive on "upselling".
-changing oil is not rocket science however dealer techs (including oil change people) require constant training because newer vehicles require different weight oil. I cant tell you how many new car owners go to quick lane oil change places for service only to have wrong weight/blend of oil put into their engine...and then come to the dealership because the engine now has a ticking/tapping sound. These quick lane places hire straight off the street and majority get paid a commission on "upselling". Dealership lube techs should know the capicity and weight/blend oil to use in your vehicle. Also dealer lube techs get a flat hourly rate instead of commission on what they "upsell".
-Most importantly (in my experience) if you have your vehicle serviced at the dealership and issues arise later (ex: enternal engine issues) the vehicle manufacturer is more likely to "help out" with repairs than if you had your vehicle serviced at one of the quick lane places.
Jmo.

Small savings doesn't justify the inconvenience.

Used to be just pour it on any fire ant mound
I'm a good citizen now and take it to the recycling center.

Goes into the empty jug of oil or similar container. Once a year I take it by an auto shop and drop it off. I wear nitrile gloves when changing it so no mess on my hands either
