Does this mean Real Madrid will be uncontested for the next 100 yeas in La Liga?

Catalonia would be the hardest left country in the EU if this goes through, but that would probably also save Spain from heading in that direction. Regardless, this opens up the way for self-determination Lichtenstein style, and that's a good thing. If we're lucky, we'll have several hundred (maybe even a thousand!) more new states in the upcoming decades.
So perhaps it would look like feudal Europe?

Real fans watch the EPL anyways...

Probably more like Republican Northern Italy, but of course different places will have their own particular qualities.

I hope they don’t devolve into bloodshed and murder. I really do. Particularly when life in Catalonia is so freaking sweet already.

I’m sort of embarrassed to say that I have no clue what any of this means or why it happened or why it’s important

THe end result of this will be the collapse of the great nation states of Europe (Germany, France, Spain, and Italy) and the rise of an EU Constitution, a united nation state for much of Continental Europe (heavily run and financed by Germans, of course).
10 years ago I wrote a paper and had a doctoral candidate belittle it as impossible.
And here we go.
Germany will own Europe without firing a shot.

Just google Catalunya Region or something.
Area is very distinct from Spain. They have their own language and culture. Fly their own flag and have a disdain for Madrid.

It should also be noted that there has never been a Catalonian nation, the same as the Basque and probably another Spanish subethnicity. Most Catalonians speak Spanish exclusively.

Well the last Spanish Civil War was a real motherfricker. Wonder how this one will go?

Belgium will be two, maybe three countries in my lifetime. Scotland will become independent given the outcome of the Brexit vote, but Shetland wants to remain part of the U.K. regardless. Who knows what will come of Welsh nationalism and the situation in Ulster. The Basques in Spain and France will likely follow the Catalans and who knows the effect this will have on Galician nationalism. The fracturing of Europe on this scale isn't something we've seen since before WWI.

Yeah this thread has sent me down the rabbit hole looking at the demographics and political history of the region.

Communist regimes always devolve into bloodshed and murder. Without fail

And it's fantastic! I'm all for breaking up centralized nation-states in order to establish (or reestablish) more homogenous polities. It's a much taller order here in the US, where our identities aren't nearly as distinct.
