Regardless, this opens up the way for self-determination Lichtenstein style, and that's a good thing. If we're lucky, we'll have several hundred (maybe even a thousand!) more new states in the upcoming decades.

Spain is a microcosm for what's going on throughout Europe. There are many separatist regions in practically every major European country.

Highly doubtful. Catalonia has a diverse economy and an educated workforce. The only way they starve is if Spain and the EU impose an embargo

Does anyone have any insight as to why
a) a percentage of Catalonians chose not to vote in the election
b) why the opposition party (above) chose not to participate in the vote.
I love that region of Spain and the cities of Gerona and Tarragona especially. I wish they had gone on their own at the same time Portugal spilt from the rest of the peninsula.

THe end result of this will be the collapse of the great nation states of Europe (Germany, France, Spain, and Italy) and the rise of an EU Constitution, a united nation state for much of Continental Europe (heavily run and financed by Germans, of course).

If they enact the wrong policies, it can easily happen. Catalonian preferences turn towards the cosmopolitan and multicultural, so they could very easily 'suffer' a huge influx of Moroccan, Algerian, Libyan, etc., migrants that milk the shite out of their existing capital and revenues.

Many of the catalan polling stations were blockaded or raided by the Spanish National gov't
That probably lead to some staying home due to safety concerns
the opoosition party probably saw the writing on the wall and left knowing the issue was already decided and they had lost.

Businesses could always choose to relocate to actual Spain or another part of Europe if they feel like Catalonia will be too volatile of a place for the forseeable future.

if you study Catalonia in a vacuum by itself then yes I agree with you.
However, look at the recent elections that took place in Scotland and the subsequent BREXIT vote.
There are also numerous separatist movements currently ongoing.
There's a growing undercurrent of regionalism. Especially given the divisive issues of EU membership and muslim refugees.
Catalonia will be a case study for both sides of the coin.
