Speaking of guinea pigs, our little experiment of criminalizing everything under the sun hasn't been very successful. At which point Justice Gorsuch is decrying overcriminalization from the bench, maybe it's time to reassess what we've been doing: Reason.com

Yep, literally no other options between locking people in cages for long stretches of time and midnight basketball leagues

I'm in favor of the decriminalization of drugs but I'd rather us stiffen penalties for crimes that have an actual victim.

Oh, that’s not the only common denominator.

Well shite, let's just allow them to steal anything they want, anytime, and as often as they want. That will surely reduce recidivism.

It will reduce the amount of tax base left in those neighborhoods. That's for damn sure.

In my experience, lay people nearly always underestimate how much time a particular crime can carry. But I'm willing to hear you out. Are there any crimes in particular that you believe we need to increase the maximum sentences for in Louisiana?

How often are those max sentences applied? Didn't the NBA rapper guy get probation for attempted murder?

Where do they go after stealing a car? Do they drive the vehicle with fake tags or take it to a chop shop?

They are mostly joy riding in them or using them for other crimes.

Then they dump them in the fairgrounds.

Depends on the charge and the case. But even if the max isn't hit, most crimes of violence people care about have sky high numbers. You don't need to actually get the max of 99 years on an Armed Robbery for you to die in prison, for example.

And as for NBA YoungBoy, he got a short jail stint and then house arrest because the ADA reduced the charges from Attempted First Degree Murder to Aggravated Assault with a Firearm: LINK

Shifting funding from base incarceration to vastly more intensive probation supervision involving job training and placement on the lighter end and robust Reentry Court programs on the heavier end. For starters.

Right.

Coincidentally I’ve never argued with or run from the police. Nor have I done anything evasive or belligerent while interacting with them. As a result, I’ve never been tased or mistreated by the police. Strange how that’s worked out isn’t it?

Probation is a joke

And job training for minimum wage jobs will never be taken seriously as long as crime pays more for these idiots

All of what you typed is fairy tale land

So you’ve never borrowed a single pill from a family member’s script until you could get to the doctor? You’ve always claimed and paid all of your Internet purchases on your Louisiana tax return every year?

The strawman you just built is a joke, sure. Who said anything about limiting it to training for minimum wage jobs?

I also imagine you have absolutely zero idea what reentry court is. But I suppose I could be surprised.

I honestly don’t give a shite what you’d like, and no, I have no interest in fighting some random troglodyte because I hurt his feelings on an anonymous message board

You also assume criminals want to become productive members of society. The majority of the crime is committed by a very small percentage of the population. Some people don’t care about law and order.
