Any career that requires using tools and having some aptitude for repairing things seems to be in high demand.

Might be one of my good friends. Got his master plumbing license about 8 yrs ago. He has a degree from A&M, but decided to go this route. Started off small with 1 helper doing mostly residential. Then he made some contacts and began doing new construction only (mostly apartment buildings). Now he has a crew of about 15+ plumbers and apprentices, custom built his own 5450sq ft home, has a vacation home in Broken Bow, wife drives a Mercedes, he drives a GMC Denali edition(these don't include his work truck and 8 company vehicles)... He almost never actually works anymore either, he just schedules the guys under him. He's looking into more property for investment purposes b/c he said he's making so much money now his taxes are nuts.
It's crazy. Dude will the a millionaire, if he isn't already one within the span of about 8 yrs.
If I could go back in time, I think i'd go this route. I wouldn't be doing all the spending he is though. I'd be saving like crazy and retire at 50.

We should end all student loans for college degrees in liberal arts or non-STEM majors. We should give student loan aid to trade schools and trade apprenticeships.

Plumbing is good money but at 40 or 50 years old do you really want to be digging trenches outside in the summer heat or climbing under porches and sinks? It’s great at 18-30 but I would think it gets old fast.

Skilled contruction/service jobs, basically anything that requires post secondary schooling but not a bachelor's (people still have the mindset you need a bachelor's to be successful), non sexy tech careers (mostly jobs dealing with data), and teachers (know I will get downvoted for this).

Master plumbers aren't digging trenches themselves. They hire laborers for that stuff. My friend who is a master plumber basically just runs his company and all of the guys under him... they're the ones going under houses, in attics, etc

Might depend on the high school, but I know mine certainly didn't push anyone to go to trade school. The college counselor tried as hard as they could to get students to go to out of state, private universities, presumably for school recognition and maybe some back end deals. Can't say for certain though, but I wish I was told about trade school before making the decision to go to college, albeit I went to college pretty much for free thanks to TOPS.

Same here, and same with my kids. They think that if they go to LSU and eschew borrowing a sum that could buy a small house, they've somehow lost out to their classmates who did. You can sit there and tell them, "you won't even remember these people in 10 years," but it's all about the here and now, and there are some very pernicious influences pushing them to go to the very "best" school they can, by hook or by crook.
I was too smart for that, or maybe just too lazy. I was sick of having to depend on my parents for shite and really just wanted to reach the point where I could afford a running, insured car and a cockroach-free apartment without having to listen to a bunch of crap from them. Getting a technical degree at a state school was the best path to that.

It's like if he has an appliance of his own go bad he takes enough work to get a new top of the line replacement. Or if his boat needs work, he'll do some work.

There's a happy medium there.
Also, it's not that off-the-wall to think that if someone's parents didn't go to college, they should also look elsewhere before considering college. That sort of class distinction isn't considered weird in most countries. We just live in Walt Disney Follow-Your-Dream World.

Any trade if and this is a big if in todays world, you show up when you say your going to show up and you do the job on time and on budget. Do those things above and you can just about print money because 90% of your competition won't do those things consistently.
