Putting in pex for corroded copper lines is a bit tougher, but still not something an average baw wouldn't be able to figure out.

I have replaced some small sections of copper with pex on my own. This spring I had to install a completely new water line and do the whole house with pex...I paid someone else for that

"I'm not very useful when it comes to electrical"

Please man, take the money you save on the plumbing and hire an electrician. Co-workers son got killed a few months back trying to save a few bucks.

I can't get a plumber to pick up phone, call me back, or keep an appointment. Seems if you provide the slightest amount of customer service you could gain a foothold in a market quickly

I don't think it's a customer service issue, I think it's a supply and demand issue.

Most residential jobs would take an hour to complete (commuting + labor) for $200 or less in revenue. If they have their pick of commercial jobs and/or higher value residential jobs and/or closer residential jobs, the small time stuff gets least priority.

The guy I used for a pretty involved septic issue had a couple of young guys that he used for basic stuff unless he needed them doing the gopher labor for more intensive jobs, but a lot of the smaller outfits can't afford to carry a larger payroll or just straight up don't want to deal with the hassle of it.

I actually asked my wife, last night, what would posses a white guy to become a cop in city with a very large black population like Atlanta? No matter how great of a cop you may be, eventually you are going to be accused of being racist when dealing with black criminals, and now we know, your employer will go along with the mob mentaility.

High schools need to focus on trades instead of shoving college & student loans down kids throats

A lot of them do (especially in the last decade) but the participation is low. A lot of the kids who would benefit from it see it as "too much work" and high achieving students stick to a college prep curriculum. You pretty much have to bus the kids to a community college because it's hard to convince a trades teacher to teach at a high school.

My plumber no longer works outside, doesn't leave 2 zip codes, and takes off all of deer season. He makes a killing on the jobs he chooses to take. All you have to do is be good and you get all the work you want handed to you by regulars.

We have some trade magnets in our district but they're often lean for applications.

Parents need to do a better job of modeling that a trade is good work.

There was a guy who introduced himself to my development team as a "typical project management douchebag." And let me tell you, he was not lying.

I can attest to this! I just bought a new one. Had an issue, and they said it would be 2-3 weeks before someone could come out. This is a 2 month hot tub, under warranty.

The trades are hurting. Big time. Plumbers, mechanics, HVAC techs, sheet metal workers, etc. if you have a little desire you can do very well.

I worked for the GC that just built the Dallas Cowboys new headquarters. The master plumber for the plumbing subcontractor told me he put all four of his kids through private colleges all out of pocket. Went into plumbing straight out of high school and is killing it now. Any specialized trade like that has stunning salary and benefits now for that very reason, its not what schools and parents push their kids into.

You can still learn a trade in the Military. In the Air Force, a lot of the trades on base are still done by military, but the Urmy uses civilian for such jobs.
