Capitalism is making you lonely.

Weird piece from Jacobin, my favorite thing to read while taking a shite. Honestly I don't know how people go through life wringing their hands and seeing nothing but suffering everywhere they look. It must be exhausting.

quote:
In a capitalist system, many people don’t have time to see family and maintain existing friendships — let alone create and nurture new ones. It is difficult to make time to see people when you are, for example, working multiple jobs (often with irregular shift times), commuting, caring for children and family members, and doing basic tasks like cooking, going to the grocery store, and doing laundry, sometimes all at once. Social time often necessarily gets bumped to the bottom of the to-do list. Public spaces in which to spend social time for free or cheap are also increasingly rare, and when money is tight, necessities get priority. These factors mean that busy social lives are increasingly reserved for those who can afford them.
quote:
Another problem has to do with the ways in which capital flows have disrupted long-standing community ties. In rural towns and post-industrial cities, capital has fled. Young people in these places find themselves pulled to capital centers like London or New York in order to find good jobs.
Moving to the big city doesn’t necessarily mean alienation. In fact, for many LGBT people, major urban centers remain places where they can seek true community for the first time. But massive population outflows tend to be alienating, both for the people who leave and for the people who stay behind.
In other cases, community disintegration happens in reverse. People who grew up in city centers are pushed out by rising rents, scattering to cheaper locales. They may meet new people in their new communities, but bonds built over the course of years, decades, and generations can never be replaced.

Plenty of friends amongst people in the bread lines I suppose

If we just lived where the government told us to live, we could have lasting bondage...err....bonds. Ya. Bonds.

I mean, to be perfectly honest, the best form of society would be small, homogeneous, cooperatives. That kind of voluntary socialism can WORK in those small settings where everyone is contributing and all is agreed upon.
The problem is, it doesn’t scale up, especially when you have certain groups which simply don’t fit the mold in certain numbers and wreck the system.

Is capitalism perfect? No. There are some aspects of it that need to be changed, but I wouldn't want to live in a society that isn't a capitalist society.

You would think literate.people could make legitimate critiques of consumerism and materialism without going completely batshit Marxist talking-point crazy.

It’s social media. Not capitalism

I hate to break it to you, but the US is not a capitalist country. Hasn't been for some time now.

You are delusional to think the alternative to capitalism would look better than your view of the current situation

The either/or crowd. Everything is extreme.
I hate consumerism, but capitalism is the only system that allows autonomy and success. The Marxists would destroy the entire system for a few lazy people.

North Korea vs South Korea. Argument over.

I would support legislation that helps worker co-ops get small business loans to get more data on how well they work. As long as it remains voluntary I dont see anything wrong with it.

Leisure is a luxury. The description of the life of a person with no time for a social life is essentially the description of 99% of the world 200 years ago.

Excuses for retarded incels and introverts.
Moving usually means opportunity, like it has for centuries in the past.

People complaining about capitalism are the ones who wouldn't do shite in a socialist society.
They probably aren't doing shite now.

Yes just look at all the fellowship and time to commingle the residents of homeless camps have. Seems very fulfilling.
Nothing better than the utopian dreams of misguided, ignorant leftists.

Capitalisms isn't evil, it just requires individuals to be intelligent with their finances. Communism takes that responsibility away from the individual at the expense of their potential to considerably improve their financial future.
People lack accountability for their actions and try to blame the "system" versus reflecting on their own decisions.
