I was at a wedding last month and couldn’t believe the lack of fricks given by half the guests. The groom was a firefighter and his work buddies ran the gamut from a suit without a tie to one dude in ripped jeans and work boots that still had mud on them. The brides guests were not much better. I, guest of the brides parents, was one of the few people in a suit and tie. I am not a huge formal person or anything but do believe it is a sign of respect to dress appropriately at weddings and funerals. You don’t wear blue jeans to an evening formal wedding people.

Wedding? I would wear a tie. Rehearsal? No tie can be done if done right.
The exception I think is if it is a day wedding. Then I think you could get away with no tie. But for a wedding at night, just wear the tie.

Maybe you were the one messing up their casual wedding?
I went to a funeral recently and was the only one dressed nicely. It was uncomfortable.

Nope. It was a formal affair. The mother of the bride was pretty pissed at the people and said some stuff after a few drinks. Which was pretty funny actually. On the plus side, some of the girls dressed like they were going to the club in some very short little outfits. No pics unfortunately.

Night wedding at a decent venue almost always means tie. Especially in the fall/winter

Well no tie with a suit is out. If you don't wear a tie wear a blazer and slacks.

Technically you can, and no one will likely say anything.
But me personally and anyone I’m responsible for dressing will never wear a suit without a tie. I love when I get a chance to dress in style cause with work and other activities my family partakes in, dressing up nice is rare.

Different for every wedding, imo.
Wear the suit and tie. Get there early, stay in car and see what other guest are wearing as they walk in.
If you feel overdressed, take the time off or take the jacket off but leave the tie.
I've been to a trashy as hell wedding (not by choice) that I was the only person wearing a suit, including the wedding party

If the reception is at the trailer park recreation center (especially if there are underage girls hanging around at the dumpster trying to bum cigs), then go with the no tie look.

This. I hate that few wear a coat and tie to church any more. I'll say this - our numerous local black churches - the guys are dressed to the nines.
I went to see Al Green and didn't have time to change so I went in a suit. I thought I'd be overdressed - not at all.

A suit with no tie is never a good fashion idea. That's why they make sports coats. If you do not want to wear a tie, wear a sports coat instead. Even the nicest customs suits look weird without a tie. Unless, of course, you are tall, lean, dark and very handsome. Like model handsome.
