I think the protesters see McKinley as the image of westward expansion and Native American oppression. The LA Times article wasn't exactly clear, which makes me think that they don't even really know why.
But if I have it right, residents of a California town that is 80% white are protesting McKinley's apparent support of expansionist policies and the effect on Native Americans.

Sky screamers had long been upset about the tallest mountain in Alaska (and the US) being named Mount McKinley. The Indians were all butthurt about it not being named Denali. So they got Obama to take some time away from gobbling cock and change the name.
