How hard was it to build castles back in the day. Most of the ones I've seen were on mountains.

DID they have any kind of crude, servant powered elevators?

It had to be a bitch to build these things.

They had rudimentary cranes powered by people and/or livestock plus an army of slaves (peasants) to do the work. They would build castles during the growing season after planting was over to keep the workforce busy until harvest time.

OSHA wasn't around, so I'm sure there were some pretty damn unsafe working conditions and a lot of people died.

Yes.

If you’re actually interested, they’re currently building a castle in France using the old techniques. LINK

You can actually sign up to help build it if you want

The actual building was hard laborious work. But the real struggle was getting past the endless environmental impact studies.

The castle in the OP is much more modern than they put in.

Castles made of sand fall into the sea, eventually.

There's a BBC documentary series called Secrets of the Castle that answers all these questions and more.

The castle you posted, Neuschwanstein Castle, was built in the mid to late 1800's so they had steam powered cranes.

I’m always in awe of this structure when I drive past it. Architectural marvel.

Neuschwanstein is breathtaking from the outside, but the inside disappoints.

Neuschwanstein is so beautiful from the outside that I would have expected it to be just as beautiful on the inside. That's very disappointing!
