yea, Workers' Compensation should be thrown out too
Yes
an idiotic and uneducated response, on a vast number of levels.
Let one of your family members lose a limb at work, at no fault of their own, only to be fired because now they are useless to their employer. Oh, and your medical bills? You handle that on your own now, with no job!
That is EXACTLY what happened on assembly lines before Workers' Compensation was introduced.
You self proclaimed "libertarians" who think all things government related are a detriment to society are a real hoot. But you don't live in reality. And I'm by no means a big government guy. I just like to think the answer is never in the black or the white.

I know you don't want to hear it, but you're a big government lover. People like you think that once the government passes legislation or enacts policies that they claim are "for the good of the people" that those policies are beyond reproach. They are not.
Smoking is not illegal, so to tell businesses they cannot allow a legal activity on their property is absolutely an abuse of government power.

Don't get me wrong- I am against this law. I'm in Tennessee, and we allow smoking in bars. But you wouldn't know it, because it worked itself out. Between not wanting to be a shitty/trashy bar and rising healthcare costs, bars made the decision themselves.
My issue with you is that you simply act like a- you have all the answers and b- those answers are "muh big government can kiss muh arse".
I'd love a better response than "yes" as to why you think Workers' Comp should be eliminated. Let me grab a cup of coffee.
eta and I am not a big government lover. The government takes 25% of my check. I pay more in taxes than many on this board earn in a fricking year, and it drives me insane. I'm just saying not everything is an abuse of power. I see you tout that bullshite on this board all the time, no matter how much knowledge you have or don't have on a particular subject.

Telling an owner of a business that he cannot allow his customers to engage in perfectly legal activities on his own property is an abuse of government power. If you would like to refute that, then go ahead.

I knew that response would send you into a "we need government and there are no other solutions" tailspin.

because we do need government in certain areas. You live in the black or white. I live in the gray. I view government on an "as needed" basis. You seemingly believe all things government related are a waste, or an abuse of power.
And i'm not refuting your first comment at all. I agree that bar owners should be able to allow people to smoke if they want.

Now that I can't rip heaters in Fred's, how am I supposed to convince the girls to come home with me?

Not true. I believe the majority of things government related are abuses of power. This smoking ban is clearly an abuse and the people that support it can't tell their arse from a hole in the ground unless big brother tells them the difference.
The truth is that the government fricks up most of what they touch.

So in other words, workers' compensation shouldn't be eliminated?

I'm sure there's a more efficient free market solution.

ah, the ole I have no idea besides free market will figure it out on it's own idea.
Love that one.

I'm not an expert in the field of WC. Using the history of the last 150 years of government inefficiency and piss poor cost effectiveness, I can confidently make that statement.
I think government has a role in things like the military, but anyone that's in the military can tell you the government fricks that up too.

frick not being able to smoke in a casino.

being confident doesn't mean you're right. The WC field is far from perfect, and TX is actually doing some other shite that may or may not work. They are not forcing employers to enroll in WC, but rather leaving them open to legal liability of injured employees.
Naturally, ambulance chasers are flooding the state, negligence suits are on the constant rise, at astronomical settlement numbers, and most employers are still buying the insurance in some form.
I've been in this field for close to a decade, and can confidently say each time this system has been altered to allow employers to handle on their own, either they frick themselves or they frick their injured employees. Period.
I'm not saying there isn't a better alternative. I'm just saying it hasn't been found, since the late 1800s.

Ok.
I still think that the government abuses it's power the majority of the time. This ordinance is clear proof of that.
