I have a feeling the shelter might win though as I doubt they would have the 7 day policy without some type of precedent

let me see if I could put it in a way that will help you understand. It would be like if someone found your registered handgun on the ground and then sold it to a pawn shop. The pawn shop then sells your weapon to someone else. That weapon is still rightfully yours and would be returned to you by law enforcement.

I definitely agree with that. I asked if there was a shot record, chip, or any kind of legal documentation. They self administered the shots from the feed store(which a lot of people do). Unfortunately there is probably no legal recourse because of the lack of a paper trail.

I really don't think this analogy works
I really don't know how the shelter laws work, but they have to have some type of precedent when it comes to the 7 day policy
would the owners have legal recourse if the shelter killed the dog?
and if your analogy works, then they should just call the cops and get their dog back, no?
they know where she lives and her name and everything

I'll concede that there could be a legal precedent that I am unaware of. however, the analogy is perfectly fine.

i dont give a F why they were down here, you're not a "great person" if you rescued a dog, original dog owners locate you and want their dog that they clearly adore but are denied getting him back. POS in my opinion

One of our dogs got out, got picked up down the street 5 minutes after getting out but we didn't have a tag on him. Lady brought him to the Humane Society to read the chip.
When we adopted him 3 years ago the chip was never transferred to our name, and we had to wait the 7 days to re-adopt our dog and pay all the fees etc.
I made it extremely clear with the highest level person i could find in the city over Animal Control that there would be hell to pay if my dog was adopted by someone else or accidentally put down. He tried to intervene with the Humane Society but they would not budge with that 7 day rule. Once the 7th day passed the dog could be put up for adoption again as the Humane Society now had legal possession. I ended up showing up 2.5 hours before they opened on day 7 to make sure no one else got my dog.
TL;DR they're real strict about that 7 day rule and how ownership is transferred after that. The only way to prove your the owner is a chip.

yeah I'm really bored so I've been trying to research shelter laws and it varies by state, but after a set amount of days, the shelter has the right to pretty much do whatever they want with the animal
the 7 day period is there for the owner the claim the dog, but they have to provide some type of documentation to prove they own the dog

The man and woman who own the dog are a deputy and an RN. The deputy surely knows an attorney that can clear this up with the quickness. I would go get my dog.

This is what court orders are for. Find a willing judge to get a hearing contesting ownership of property. Most people don't want to hire a lawyer to go through all of that, especially when it's easier just to let it go.
