BREC to unveil plans for Baton Rouge (Baker) Zoo and Greenwood Park with a party on Aug. 17

BREC will unveil its master plan for improvements to both Greenwood Park and Baton Rouge Zoo on Aug. 17 with a party to which the public will be invited, BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson told the Baker City Council on Tuesday.
The Baton Rouge Recreation Commission has been planning to improve the zoo since it decided in 2018, in response to public outcry, to keep it in its current location on Thomas Road, Wilson said.
One of the main parts of the plan is to move the zoo entrance to Highway 19 and combine the parking lot with Greenwood Park, bringing more visibility to both facilities. Improvements to the zoo and Greenwood Park will be done in phases, with a groundbreaking in summer 2020, Wilson said.

Some $5 million earmarked in 2014 for zoo improvements still hasn’t been spent, Wilson said, and that money will be used for phase one.
Upgrades planned for Greenwood Park include expanding the Waterfront Building, adding a kitchen for public use and more space to the popular structure.
“We hear that people hold weddings there and they have to bring in food,” Wilson said.
BREC also plans to renovate the Cohn Arboretum house within Cohn Arboretum on Foster Road to preserve the history of the building, while at the same time bringing it up to date, he said.
Mayor Darnell Waites said the city and BREC are seeking state funds to bring softball and baseball fields in Baker up to tournament level so high school teams can compete within the city. At least $1.6 million is needed for those improvements, the mayor said.
I'm so glad they are keeping the zoo way up in Baker. Moving it to a more convenient location just makes too much sense.

Remember folks, Gary prefers we recognize the zoo by its new name, "The North Baton Rouge Zoo".
Perhaps North Baton Rouge will form a break away district.

We'll see a direct correlation between park improvements and an increase in LEAP scores, a decrease of fatherless families, and a sharp drop in murders!

The people who use Greenwood the most, by far, are the disc golfers, and it looks like they're getting screwed once again.

They should just close it down.

Will there be a tunnel to the zoo, so you don't have to drive through North Baton Rouge to get there?

I-110. It's really a decent location as far as zoos go. Not that hard to get to by most in the parish. How convenient do you think getting to SBR is from Central?

Those poor zoo animals should be returned to their native habitat and this zoo should be closed. Perhaps they could lease the land for a grocery store that they say they need.

That area isnt a terrible park. Dumas revitalized and tying it all to the nice zoo would be nice.

Went to the zoo last week for an event. I cannot believe that place is allowed to stay open.

I agree with this. Has anyone driven in South Baton Rouge lately? The traffic sucks.
We go a good bit and have never felt threatened or unsafe. Plus, I don't believe their cost to build in South BR.

Hence the "Overhaul".
