UPDATE: DOTD says it expects the bridge to be closed for months as crews continue repairs.

Inspections of the Sunshine Bridge/LA 70 concluded that key load-carrying components of the bridge suffered significant damage after a crane on a barge collided with the southwest portion of the bridge on Friday.

"Bridge engineers are in the process of finalizing a design to execute the repairs. Once that design is finalized, successfully modeled and we have a better idea of what resources are needed and available, an estimated timeline for the repair project will be released. At this point, the potential timeline is believed to be months rather than days," a release from DOTD said Monday.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Plaquemine Ferry or the Veterans Memorial Bridge as an alternate river crossing.

The frickhead who hit this needs to be deported.

Was he one of those riverboat pilots that's not in a family of riverboat pilots, so they didn't pass on the right information to him?

Pretty sure it wasn’t a pilot on the tug.

Anyone who thought this would take less than “months” is oblivious. I’d expect this repair to be complete around February or so.

No. the pilots only work on ocean going ships not a tug and barge.

shite it took over a year to open that entrance ramp on I-10 right past Donaldsonville after an 18 wheeler hit it, God knows how long it'll take to fix the bridge. Those gas stations and other businesses at the foot of the bridge are going to be struggling without all the traffic going through there.

Do all of those businesses have a claim against the tug boat operator who hit the bridge for lost revenue?

Unless a court can prove gross negligence, per the Jones Act, the operator is only liable for the value of the vessel and its cargo.

So where does all the traffic get diverted? I am sure it will increase load on I-10 bridge, but the Gramercy bridge is actually a lot closer to the location. Hoping they get a lot of the would be sunshine bridge traffic just to ease BR bridge load bc it can't handle what it already had before closure.

And yes, those restaurants and gas stations on both sides are going to be hurting real bad. Some may not make it.
