This is political grandstanding to appease the anti-downtown development crowd; letting them know he's fighting against anything and everything benefiting "those people" who live in and near downtown, and it is sad that people on here are defending it.

He's on that Kip Holden election plan. Just say anything as often as you can to the press so enough people remember your name. Then when it comes down to election time, more people know who you are than the other candidates.
FWIW, the library rents blu-rays (new releases included). Why pay $ to redbox when you can rent it for free and keep it longer.

I just think our society is seriously going down the drain if people are upset over a public library being built. Libraries provide so much for the public besides books. And so what if homeless people go to the libraries....at least they are sitting there reading and stimulating their minds vs sitting drunk under an overpass. As a poor kid growing up in BR...I frequented the library often and developed a love for it(it was my dream job I had in HS). If I was a poor kid now...I could access the internet at a library and be able to use it help with my schoolwork to further myself in my education. As a poor adult, I could use computers at the library to help find better jobs, etc.
Everyone complains about the poor not trying to get themselves out of their current situations...but you want to get rid of a resource that many people(including the poor) use?

Pure hyperbole and a strawman. Not one person wants to get rid of libraries. We just don't think we need so many and so many giant ones. Pick which one is your main one and make it awesome.

You're right. Everyone should be able to afford unlimited books from Amazon, streaming movies and DVDs from Netflix, unlimited internet access and the hardware needed to interface with the web.
Raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour and close the libraries!

All of this is going on now, and yet we can't find money to build an interchange at Pecue and I-10. We have a new 19 million dollar library, a want for a new zoo, a new rail line between LSU and downtown (100 million in fed dollars), CATS going wild wilth routes that no one rides, and 50 million or so to dredge the lakes.
All the projects might seem worthy, but to a lot of people spending money on those things is way behind public safety and traffic issues.

From this thread it seems those that think libraries are great give the access to DVDs, CDs, Ebooks, internet, 3D printers, children's programs, etc. as the reason, few mentioned books. Do we really need to keep spending money for mammoth buildings where most of the space is for storing books that are rarely used. Also, too many of the texts that are shelved are old, and outdated. Only a couple of years ago I was in the BR downtown library and there were books in the computer tech section on building your own "8088 or 286" based computer. 95% of the volumes in that section should have been tossed in the trash, but I would make a sizeable bet they are still there and will be moved to the new library.

They seem to be flush with cash because they manage the money they receive from taxes appropriately. I would much rather have an organization with a surplus because of proper management vs one that seeks to spend every dime they pull in no matter the cost.
I'm not saying that there are not issues with other city/state organizations that have an affect on the BTR area. I just think that the way BREC and the Library system are run is something other organizations should aspire to. The public can see tangible benefits from each organization (i.e. compare BREC parks from 2002 to now, with the implementation of the 'Imagine your Parks' program/tax increase).
Speaking of CATS, they seem to be suffering not only from a lack of financial and executive mismanagement, but bad traffic/lack of connectivity, aging buses, lack of ridership, etc. It is frankly sad that a route that would appeal to an nontraditional ridership basis (Garden District Trolley) is going to most likely be shut down because only a handful of people ride it. The balancing act that has to go on between all of these different interest is almost impossible to get right in every instance.

Overdrive is a crappy program, very user unfriendly. When looking for books on a topic and there are a list of results from the search, when I select one of the results to see if it is the book I want, I am unable to "return to the search results." I have to do the search over and regenerate the list of search results.
I was at the "Palace on Goodwood" and a library employee was helping me look for a book. I mentioned the trouble I have with Overdrive and his response was (paraphrased): "yep, you have to do the search over. All libraries use Overdrive and that's what you have to do."
Seriously? Because everyone uses the crappy program we have to accept it and use the resources our overlords have selected for us?

Used to work at the library, yeah people don't understand the wealth of things the library offers:
-Brand new blu-rays and dvd's (tv shows and movies) - they will order anything you want that they don't have.
-Access to any book in the world via ILL (seriously)
-E-books
-CD's
-computers with 20 free prints
-current magazines
-art that can be checked out
-programs for kids
-programs for teens
-quiet places and comfortable chairs/couches to read
Libraries these days are insane.

I think all libraries should be privatized. I'm tired of paying $300 annually via property taxes for that bullshite.
Why does BR never get a libertarian running for mayor? I might try in about 20 years and run on a platform of privatizing every damn thing I can, including the library. If I have not reduced the city government's budget (and staff) by 90% by the time I leave office, I will have failed as mayor.
