I go to my local library often. I usually go ony way home from work around 5:00.
It is very crowded usually 30-45 people. Everyone on the internet, using Facebook, playing flash games, etc.....
No one reading or looking at books.

EBR library system is actually pretty awesome. Always getting new stuff: DVDs, Blu Rays, Music, Magazines and of course books. I have found lots or rare, hard to find items at EBR libraries. The catalog website is very good. Placing an item on Hold is very user friendly. If you want an item which is located at a library on the other side of town if can put in a request and they will quickly bring it to your local branch for pick up. I also see lots of kids studying and being tutored at EBR libraries.

The Baton Rouge library provides both of these things as well.
I've rented the ebooks before... have not used the 3D printers.

First of all, downtown doesn't need a new library with the Carver branch so close and so recently renovated.
Secondly, if you're going to renovate the library downtown, the design they have is rediculous and wasteful.
Third, if you're going to use the rediculus and wasteful design, there's no need to keep the library open while you remodel it.
Finally, if you're going to rent space to keep the library open while it's being remodeled, space an be had downtown for a hell of a lot cheaper than $15,000/month!
Let's do the math:
$15,000/month = $500/day
250 people/day means it costs the library system $2/day/person just in rent. For an organization like a library, that's insanity. That's not even accounting for overhead to staff it and run it, that's just rent.
Renting a space for $15,000 per month to temporarily house the library is a massive waste of resources. It's unnecessary, and even if it was, it can be done much cheaper.
You'll be happy to know that the original proposal (prior to the new Goodwood Library) was for a mega-Main-Branch to be built downtown. That was turned down in favor of Goodwood being replaced with the current awesome facility and the downtown branch being rebuilt (but kept small).
The Carver Library is a pretty small facility. It's nice, but too small to provide for the entire western half of Baton Rouge.
They might find a cheaper rent downtown, but a temporary facility isn't an insane waste of money.

Agreed. If you are wanting to build up your downtown, you have to maintain a library there for people to have access to. I would imagine most every city with a thriving downtown...has a public library location there.
Even though it was older...I always loved the downtown library location in BR.

I went to the Bluebonnet Library on Monday night and it was packed. I can still see the purpose behind libraries, and they are adapting to changes in tech (ebooks, new features and designs at the Main Library, etc.) Hell, Bluebonnet had a ton of Blurays for rent and I just got an email from EBR Library saying they are going to have streaming movies available.
However, when I saw that number for visitors, I did a double take, as it does seem a lot of the traffic could be from those mentioned previously. And the Kress building rental agreement just seems like a fairly steep agreement. Again though, this is the Metro Council at their best, political posturing and stupid comments.
This is asinine, those 2 public entities might be the best thing BTR has going for it.

I cannot deny that. But, why spend a fortune on the Goodwood Library then say we have to have a downtown library because every thriving downtown has one? It seems like poor planning. Get what you need first (a downtown library) then work on the rest with whatever dollars are remaining.

I have kids. I have no problem providing my kids with any educational or outdoor entertainment. I do not need the government to tax everyone to build so many golf courses and water parks. I do not need this many libraries for the homeless to warm up in.
If we needed a downtown library so bad then we didn't need to build that giant goodwood library.

I dont think people realize all the things you can do at them now.
The Overdrive app lets you "borrow" books for your computer, phone or tablet. The DVD and CD selections are great. And if your branch doesnt have what you want we can have it sent from another one, or reserve it at another one for you
On the "digital library" section of ebrpl.com, there are a ton of interesting things LINK
the criterion collection link has a ton of movies to watch
the Gale courses have numerous learning activties
most branches show movies for kids on weekends as well, and all have numerous free workshops and "craft" things to learn about
