Not hiring someone because of their age is discriminatory

You can probably guess the reasons… punctuality, dress, language in the office, work ethic, etc.
These days all you have to do is half arse those principles into a child, and they will still run circles around their peers as an adult.
You probably can add drama, tending to other priorities outside of work that affect work, and being needy.
Not all Gen Z are like this, but it’s prevalent.

not gonna take your money, but I'll buy you a beer if you can find an actual legit article like that from 1942.

Also. You can only train on so much.
I work in consulting. Nobody comes in knowing how to consult on the federal area we consult on, but it's public information. Just a LOT of it. Takes a solid couple of years to fully feel confident in knowing most of it. That's totally normal and okay. It's a lot to learn.
The difference between those who have worked out great vs. those who have not are that the former group went off on their own and researched and studied the area they need to be knowledgeable in. Those who only relied on manager training, which is just internal SOP type training (how we do XYZ) are those that can't hack it.
I was reading boring 300-page regulation manuals on my flights home after work trips the first 1-2 years at it. If you aren't willing to self-learn along WITH the training, then you can't go around blaming lack of training.
I think some new employees have an unrealistic expectation of exactly what training should entail.

As someone that actually, you know, trains, it's infuriating that I can't even get a lot of staff and senior level accountants to turn on their cameras. At this point I'm not even asking for people to come into the office, but I do expect a camera on during established training periods. Trying to talk to a circle with two initials in it is beyond frustrating, especially when I'm looking for indicators that people are actually understanding what I'm saying. Also I do understand not wanting to go into the office, but it's kind of asinine to take a job that is up front that you need to be in the office twice a week only to stop showing up.
I teach folks how to do things all the time and it’s never once bothered me if their cameras are off. The vast majority of the time either I’m screen sharing or they are. I do have to admit that I’m also not working with new grads, everyone that I’m dealing with has at least 5 years of experience (and usually almost double that).

Do Millennials find Gen Z to be soft?
The older ones born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s probably do. We didn't have social media and smartphones until we were leaving college, probably the last group that had a "natural" social upbringing before the screens took over every aspect of our lives. Younger millennials had all that shite in HS, the ones born in the 90s that grew up in the 00s probably have a lot more in common with Gen Z while the older Millennials are closer to Gen X. I feel like there's a divide among Millennials depending on how old and experienced they were when Y2K and 9/11 happened

They're all going to be 'INFLUENCERS'!
Why go work for the man working insane hours like 8-5 M-F when you could be even richer and not really work. Just have to find some people to sponsor you and you're on your way.

I’ve already started telling my kids that the bar is so low, it’s never been easier for them to set themselves apart. What used to be average effort and drive now makes you look like a green beret.

You’re supposed to have all of that squared away in the interview process.
Fixed it for you.
I’ve hired and worked with lots of young engineers, and seen plenty of gen Z’ers that showed up motivated and excelled. This has been written about every generation at some point. If you’re lazy in the recruiting and hiring process or let the DEI squad do it for you, then you’ll reap what you sow. A couple will interview well and make it through, and you nut up and fire them. Any manager will tell you that’s the gig.

I would think kids that did college during covid are going to have a rough go at it.
They basically got a degree through zoom and cheating.

Letting one go tomorrow. I hate training new people but incompetence repeatedly with no asked improvement demands a change.
