The oil field worker's prayer:
"Lord, please let there be one more oil boom and next time I promise I won't piss it away."

You do know there are a shitpile of financially responsible professionals in O&G, right?
those people don't make good news stories like the 60 year old that had to move back in with mom

And if this happens and the Dr starts losing money he can pick up and practice anywhere in the country. Good luck doing that with an O&G job. Or he can just move from Lafayette to New Orleans and not be really affected by the downturn in O&G at all.
you mean just like any other professional in oil and gas?
Posted on 2/23/16 at 12:48 pm to RedRifle
It's a volatile industry.
Not much different than all of the auto factories that closed down. Those guys thought they had a nice paying job for life.
Jobs like these pay very good cash, but they can also be gone in a day.

Can the directional driller you were talking about do that?

Probably not that kind of pay but there sure is a cry for experienced workers in Lake Charles and they are paying great with per diem and everything.
Exactly, I have a buddy that is a electrical supervisor in offshore. Was making like 250k a year. His wife is a CPA but doesn't work because she feels like it is beneath her. He was bitching about having to take a huge paycut so I lined him up with an interview for a position at Sasol. He gets offered the job but turns it down because it wasn't enough pay. Starting pay was only 100k. I am not going to feel sorry for him one bit and he is one of my best friends.
Have another that is a mud engineer and was making great money too and was one of the last in ND before they stacked the last rig 2 weeks ago. He has enough to get him by for a year and his wife makes good money, but when I offered him a job as a laborer paying 20/hour just to get him by til he found something else, he turned me down and said that the work was too hard(he is in early 30s so not old). Guess what....if he has to sell some stuff I will be the first trying to buy it, dick move or not.
I don't feel sorry for people like them and these are two of my best friends and neither is a rough neck but both made damn sure that I knew they made more than me and I wasted my time getting my engineering degree.
And all the guys saying there is no work.....bring your arse on over the LC. There is plenty here. It is a little slower right now and will be til april but come april its gonna be balls to the walls for 2 or 3 years. Not just sasol and new construction projects either. Performance still needs something like 3500 skilled workers that they are willing to pay 30+ an hour plus per diem. If you can't live off of that or its beneath you to take a job like that....frick off and don't expect me to feel sorry for you.
and before somebody ask...I am a civil that works as a PM on the industrial side. I could easily be hit by a slow down and its why I have maintained my pipefitting license and fire protection license. If I had to I would go turn wrenches again in a heart beat and move anywhere I had to so I could support my family.

I said "O&G worker" earlier, but I specifically talking about the driller that you were referring to.
Folks who work in O&G accounting, HR, IT, Admin will be able to land on their feet for sure.

"There are too many people in college, degrees are basically worthless these days."
"Stupid illiterate oil field worker only has a high school diploma, should've got a degree."

the only reason I even compared them to a doctor is because someone said you shouldn't have whatever toys "unless you're a doctor"
people think most doctors make way more than they really do

Yeah DDs are still making 200K+ even with the downturn

Some physicians.
Most GP are making less than $200k., thus the shortage.

I haven't even been able to find anything like this. Every contracting company I've talked to says to check back in April. I would like to get on direct with a plant but they won't even acknowledge I exist.

Calm down cuz..
My cousin is married to a driller that was laid off too. Kid was killing it, 300k house, pool, boat, golf cart, both driving 70k cars, 25k engagement ring, wife doesn't work, private schools, etc..
They used to talk about how much more money they had compared to me. Guess what they are about to lose it all and I am still going fine making at least 2/3's less than he was drilling. Plus I have a retirement that will be in the millions (if the market holds) and if I lost my job I have money put back to where I could live for several months until I found something else.
My point is people live beyond their means whether they make 60k or 600k. Manage your money and don't invest 117k in a Polaris rzr like another guy I know did.
I hate it for everyone in that industry but, they knew the risk when they went into that field and should have planned better. Those that did are fine and will be fine.
