You do know there are a shitpile of financially responsible professionals in O&G, right?
I'm aware of this, but they are also employable in other fields. I don't think the general public has any problem with these folks. Where the disdain rolls in is when you see Joe Dirt living a lavish life style at your expense, then throws a fit when it's taken away.
You can make the argument that it's a small population of the industry that tarnishes the name, but the same can be said for any demographic of people or industry of work.

Denver's O&G is getting hit hard, but the rest of the city is fricking booming. We literally can't keep up with the influx of people moving here, and my home has appreciated 30% in 3 years. Our economy is fine, because are diversified.

A year ago, Merlin Price Jr. was working as a safety engineer on an oil rig in south Texas. Like many in Morgan City, offshore work was all he knew; He'd been doing it for 35 years.

As oil companies continue to cut back, Price is living with his mother again
So he's been making "Oil Field Cash" for 35 years and doesn't have one penny saved?
Doesn't have a home that's paid off?
Poor money management on his part.

quote:Exactly. The accounts can find jobs making similar money fairly quickly. So will the IT people and Engineers. These set of people have skill sets that can be used and are needed in every sector of our economy. Oil field guys don't have that luxury.
I'm aware of this, but they are also employable in other fields.

impossible!
Most professionals can find work in other fields. Blue collar guys will not find that kind of pay elsewhere..

So let me get this straight. He has worked offshore for 35 years making a killing and he didn't save enough so that if he lost his job he wouldn't have to live with his Mom? The problem isn't that oil prices went down, it's that people don't know how to spend their money...

Hitch your wagon to the oil industry and this is what happens. DWI

Exactly. They should really start back teaching basic economics in school. Seriously.

I'll use the argument that was used against me when I was complaining about my family hurting during the sequestration:
That's capitalism. They knew what they were getting into when they picked those jobs.
Now that the shoe is on the other foot you're the ones who are bitching about the possibility of losing your job, thereby no longer being able to provide for your families. How does it feel being a hypocrite?

This is such a played out topic. Not the actual recession, but the attitude that people enjoy these people going through hard times. shite like this is what makes me hate people.

Probably not that kind of pay but there sure is a cry for experienced workers in Lake Charles and they are paying great with per diem and everything.

And yet some of you idiots love to laugh at "low gas prices". You don't see the other side of the coin. This isn't just affecting the top but real people are losing their jobs and livelihood.
Good. No one was crying when Americans were losing jobs left and right after the housing bubble burst.
Certainly not the oil workers who were making bank driving around in their over sized trucks.

Yes lots of people were empathetic about people going through hard times.

So you were envious of the money other people made now you bask in their misery? Man, frick people like you.
And I am not even in the O&G business, but this kind of shite is disgusting.

I think this common thought was established by page 2. Thanks for playing though.
And I'm sorry, this is kind of a board where most of the people posting here live in this area, so sometimes we post things from the local point of view.
I'm fine and can't complain at all. Life is good. I hate seeing so many people who aren't ignorant asses and aren't irresponsible with their money suffer. It's not like a rise in gas prices where if there are bad things happening it's spread out all over and happens at a very very slow pace.
I feel rotten for the state and my friends who work at banks, in insurance, in support services, real estate, maritime shipping, catering, etc, etc.
To make the same stupid comments over and over about F250's and truck nuts is just fcking retarded. It's expected though, so carry on.

they'll stop going to the dr unless it's an emergency without insurance
and then won't be able to pay the bill anyway because they got laid off from the oil field
And if this happens and the Dr starts losing money he can pick up and practice anywhere in the country. Good luck doing that with an O&G job. Or he can just move from Lafayette to New Orleans and not be really affected by the downturn in O&G at all.
