The issue is the decision to chase him is inevitably going to end up in a use of lethal force, against what is an non lethal weapon the perp is running with.

That is poor policing as the guy is no harm to the public at that point

Jesus why is this so difficult to understand? The dude fought two cops, stole a taser, tried to use it on one of them. Parole violation if he goes to jail for DUI. Resisted arrest.

And we’re sitting here crucifying the cops for being put in a situation where they had to react. ALL BROUGHT ON BY THE CRIMINAL. Do criminals have no accountability for their actions?

If I was a cop in Atlanta, I’d quit today. frick these people. Give these liberal assholes what they want. Lawlessness. They’ll be begging for help as soon as shite gets real.

I honestly don’t see how we recover as a country here. These people are insane. They are teetering dangerously close to crossing a line that i truly don’t think they understand the repercussions of doing so. And when they do there will be blood shed. People aren’t going to allow animals to attack their homes.

Sounds like the DECISION the criminal made led to his death then.

Are you saying anytime you are about to get arrested, just run and you'll be fine b/c the police should never chase someone?

Yeah i'm sure the guy that just tried stealing weapons from officers trying to arrest him would be polite about stealing someones car, or breaking into someones house to hide out. I'm sure nothing would escalate from there. fricking idiot.

Atlanta police chief(I presume) referring to another case where ATL officers were fired for improper use of force. In his words, a taser is a lethal weapon per Georgia law

Zero chance this case ever even goes to court. Those officers should have their job back.

You can be rest assured that this will be used to make the argument that the officers were justified, as it should.

If I were them, I would never want that. Moving on, far, far away.

You are fricking stupid.

What about the guy's decision to fight, steal a weapon, and then run? What about those decisions, a-hole?

I don't know what HE meant, but I can tell you from reading a lot of social media comments on it, this is what everyone on the dissenting side believes should happen. In fact, if you're caught drunk driving, you should have a mental health professional check on you and get you a ride home. Nevermind that DUI is a crime.

He was presenting an imminent threat of great bodily harm to the cops in that immediate moment therefore the use of lethal force is justified. Doesn't matter if you agree or not. They were 100% justified.

how about you not drink and drive, pass out behind the wheel in the drive thru, lie to the police, resist arrest, punch a police officer in the face, steal his taser, run from the police, turn and shoot the police with stolen taser......

Those were all the poor decisions made by a now dead guy.....

And you're sitting here talking about "poor policing"?

I honestly think there is a fair-not-nuts discussion to be had over whether the cop should be a cop. I'm fine with it. I lean toward justified shoot, but it's a close call.

But publicly proposing a murder charge? It's absolute insanity.

We're essentially telling APD that you should be prepared to:

A) Ignore lawbreaking (DUI, which poses a legitimate risk of public harm);
B) Let an intoxicated person attack you and take a weapon; and
C) Subject yourself to having said weapon used against you.

20 cops have left APD in the last 10 days, and the floodgates will open if the officer is charged. And if and when that happens, what are citizens of Atlanta going to do?

Their gang violence has gone up since bottoms has been mayor. And these aren't white supremacist gangs, these are black gangbangers.

So explain to me what you think the police should have done after he stole the taser and ran away? Just chase him and try to matrix dodge the taser he shoots back at them, then politely keep chasing him until they catch him and detain him?
Tell me what would have been an example of "good policing" at that point he ran with the taser?

You are saying a drunk driver that fought police and stole a weapon is not a threat.

The officers spent 40 minutes trying to be polite and calm with the guy that was obviously bombed out his mind.

They should have called EMS and had the guy checked out....on top of that they should have detained him as soon as he ran up on the curb....

So if Lester is saying it was poor policing.....maybe he's right in that sense

Yeah, this is the bigger issue. Undermining their ability to respond to these situations will not only chip away at how the officers are willing to respond to situations, but will ultimately embolden those that interact with the cops. Not only will the cops have to worry about a mundane situation going sideways, but they'll also have to worry about if they're willing to lose their jobs, or get prosecuted for murder, if they respond accordingly. Ultimately, the general public will pay the biggest price.

Drunk people who make the decision to fight cops and run away with a stolen taser are perfectly safe to roam the public at large. There is no possible bad outcome from that scenario

People are actually trying to justify that dude's actions?

Look at them baws who started recording at JUST the moment he was shot and that's where their narrative begins.

"FOR NO REASON, SHOT HIM. UNARMED." They only see what they want to see.

He wasn't bombed out of his mind. He was drunk, and acting mostly polite and trying his best to not appear drunk, even though he was, just like any normal person would do that was being pulled over for a possible DUI.
Why would they call EMS for a routine DUI?
You don't just arrest someone immediately for DUI b/c you are pretty sure he's drunk. You go through protocols, so when the case inevitably goes to trial, you followed your protocols to show you didn't just arrest him on DUI on a hunch, and you followed all the steps to make sure he was under the influence before arresting.
