Boat in the desert is dumb

My bff in Phoenix would not agree. It’s crazy how much her boat gets used. Not as much as her pool, but absolutely enough to justify having it.

The problem I had with a boat is I went fishing even when I knew they weren’t biting. With it sitting there, I felt like I had to use it. Also, packing the family up and going to the lake became a chore.

As far as a while home generator… I live 15 miles from a grocery store. Lots of hills, ravines, pecan and oak trees. That generator is handy. Was a big purchase but I saved up, paid cash, and now forget it.

Pool, is amazing. I can get home from work with an hour left of sunshine and take a dip and chill with a drink. It’s easily accessible and the perfect boredom killer for adults and kids.

Same, it seems.

We lived many years in a house with nary a tree in sight, so we never felt the need for a generator because we never lost power.

It the 2.5 years we've been in this house with trees everywhere, we've lost power so many times it's almost surprising. I definitely do not consider it a waste of money.

I've never been very interested in leaving town for a storm for some reason.

I’m with you on this. Boat is the bigger waste. I have some good memories with the boat but about 20X more with the pool.

I sold the boat and kind of regret it. We had 6 teens at the pool all afternoon and I would fill it in if I could.

If you get a generator.. I can promise you, if you don't have whole home generator.. When the power goes out you will be wishing you had whole home generator.

Paying someone to install a pool is lighting cash on fire.

Buying a house with an existing pool or buying a boat isn’t nearly as big a waste.

I have a boat, and dream about a new boat everyday. Had a pool, don’t miss it or the maintenance.

Pool. After 3 years the kids weren’t interested in it at all so much so that I built another house and selling that one.

The boat we use as a family weekly during the summer. We fish from March thru November.
The key is having a quality boat and Maintaining it. We pull up at Ft McRee or sand island, or run 40 miles offshore.

You would use your boat more if you didn't live in the armpit of America.
If you lived on the ocean front, boat would be used.

Pools are awesome, and kore of a static cost

In the 8 years I’ve been in my house, I think I’ve been out of power for 7 hours total. And if I am out for an extended amount of time, I’m going on vacation

See I can’t do that. I’m not going to throw 2 years worth of Nilgai, Axis and whitetail in the trash before I walk out the door to go on vacation.

Getting a 26 KW installed Wednesday of next week and it’s worth every penny not having to pay for hotels or hunt for gas if a bad storm hits.

Use my pool almost year round. My Jon boat takes care of my fishing needs for cheap. Got plenty of use out of pontoon boat when I had it. Sold it when we quit using. If I had a whole home generator, I needed it about 2-3 days in the last 7-8 I can think of. My portable does just fine except in summer.

Boat

I've never had a pool in adulthood, but I've had a boat. It gets expensive with storage, insurance, maintenance, and fuel. You start to think "is it really worth it?". Then, as you leave the cove, put both throttles down, and get up on plane, you're like...."Yeah, it's worth it!"

Or is it a whole home generator?

I guess this depends on the person. I live on an island much of the year and prefer the pool over a boat. I would always use the pool more and have less issues with the pool. The pool is heated so I can use it all year, I wouldn’t use the boat much in winter.
I have a whole home generator and you can’t use it during a hurricane because of salt water intrusion. For the most part if the storm is that bad I take the battery out of the generator and turn off the electricity for the house.
