Blockbuster's downfall was due to two things:
1. They were more expensive than Netflix, and had more late fees.
2. The late 90s-early 00s were shite for movies and video games.

Its always blown my mind that Blockbuster (THE giant in video rentals) wasn't forward thinking enough to see the role that internet would play in video rentals. They were two steps behind Netflix and Redbox.

I remember when I was being a whiney little bitch and finally got my dad to rent me a "Nintendo Virtual Boy" from Blockbuster one weekend.

I have always said this!!
It use to be an event to just go to the video store and rent a movie.. Everything back then just felt like more of an experience.. It seemed like we appreciated things differently back then..
Now with the on demand and ease of access to whatever.. whenever.. it seems to have devalued the overall experience..
It's unfortunate.. I actually kind of miss the feelings of things back then.

The excitement of going to the back wall for the new releases.
I remember they would put all the actual boxes on the shelf, and the actual case the video came in would sit behind the box. The sadness when you saw 30 boxes for a new release on the shelf, and none of them had the actual case and video behind the box.
The candy selection was legit, but pricey.
Also, remembering driving like a madman to get to the store to drop off a movie before midnight.
The video industry, though, is the perfect example of an industry that thought it had no competition, so it could charge high prices and have terrible policies and customer service. That might work for a while but eventually it causes innovation which will be the downfall.

Dude, I was just entering this thread to say that. Every fricking time, just like clockwork. It sucked because Blockbuster didn't have a bathroom for you to use either. I now get the shits when I walk into Home Depot, but at least they have a bathroom to use.

Yep. fricking remember that shite every time. It was a good night if you were going to Blockbuster. Playing in little league sports, then eating out and blockbuster after with a friend to stay the night. frick, some GOOD arse times.

I miss those days but their customer treatment was grotesque and probably had as much to do with their downfall as NF. They turned me in to a collection agency bc I didn't return a movie that was checked out on my account. Never even knew I had it and it was probably rented by a friend using my card. $56 I think was the amtount due . Shouldn't have done that to a customer that has probably spent over $2,000 in your stores. Never went back after that.
