I've spent significant time in both areas...
Houston:
Pros:
People
Beaches
Cheap on taxes
Cultural Similarity
Distance from Mom
GF
Southern activities (lake life, etc.)
Hispanic chicks
Cons:
Crowded/traffic
Spanish
Less Asian chicks
Hot weather

SF
Pros:
Asian chicks
You can brag about making more
Napa
Day trips can get you to the mountains
The mild climate
Diversity of decent food
Cons:
People are pretentious assholes
Bums everywhere
Ungrateful foreigners everywhere
Traffic/crowded
Costs for everything are unreal, parking is a thing
Oakland is a shite hole
Commute will be horrible, hope you like podcasts
The mild climate, frick that
Tourists
The 49ers

Could have used this advice in 2011. Would have saved 5 years worth of SF rent.

I found that Seattle was much cleaner than San Francisco in that respect.

Thata like saying vomit is cleaner than dog shite. Both are still really nasty. The street my office is on is filthy and disgusting. Its like the paths on Roller Coaster Tycoon right outside the roller coaster exit. Trash, puke, piss, shite everywhere. It smells so bad

The state spends a lot of money trying to manage it.

Which in turn attracts/creates more homeless people. Homeless people hear some mayor talking about investing money in the homeless or to fight homelessness, and they flock there

To be clear...you are recommend not visiting areas before moving there?

No, more like, dont base whether or not a place is worth moving to based on your experiences for a few days

I had a blast in San Diego and Los Angeles when i went there for bowl trips but would never move there

Things that will matter more to you in the long run/big picture/your day to day life should be your #1 criteria

I was looking at prices in Oakland about 1k rent

For what a studio? A guy that works for me and shared a 3brm apt for 3 other guys pays over $1k/month. He does live in the marina tho.

But I doubt you can find decent place for 1k. That would be tough in Denver let alone oakland.

Short Term wise: SF.
Cost of Living high as frick
More jobs though.
A lot of VC money and entrepreneurs so your pick of big or start-ups
More fun city

Long Term wise: Houston
heavily focused in energy, so you run the risk of sector downturn
cheap property
con: spend your life driving

That's definitely one thing anyone can hang over Houstonians. No such thing as a quick weekend trip to a National Park with some vertical scenery.

You came to the wrong forum, OP

TD is full of Louisiana folks that are trying to convince themselves they like living in Houston

Come to California, mi amigo

I live in the bay and you wont find anything decent for sub 2k.

1k is a room share (small one at that) in a pretty shite tier neighborhood. If you work in the city, you prob should look @ penninsula (maybe san bruno) for value.

Also, stay in houston; dont need more plebs coming here to make my rent higher.

Yeah i am going to have to disagree there

Yep. I moved to Seattle (from BR) about 15 months ago and have loved every minute. However, until last weekend, I paid significantly more for every single good or service I have purchased. The one exception is I found a great old-time barber shop that only charges $10!

Generally Houston unless:

1) You are really big into outdoors stuff. One of the best parts of NO Cal is you can camp, hike, ski, snowboard, water sports, etc. almost year round within a short drive from the City.

2) You are making a lot of money, already explained in detail.

3) You are a straight, single, man who wants to play the field. Forget the reputation, if you can afford to live in the City you will be around the most amazing women from all over the world. There is crazy competition among women there for straight guys there who have their stuff together. Only NYC, and maybe DC has better (reasonable achievable) hook-up options for normal men.

Yep. Have to determine if the higher costs of living is worth it to you.

If you are young and single, it is an easier choice than if you are a little older and have a family.

what are you waiting for?

SF is better if ecotopian ideals are interesting and appeal to you at least in theory.
Its the most liberal medium sized city in the USA.
the SF bay area 6 counties have 6 million people.
Oakland is just 300K. SF, 800K.
most of the people are in places we don't hear much about.
San Mateo county.
The south bay is a lot like Houston. sprawling metropolis.

bohemian culture.
People find it exciting.
Cost of living is as high as it gets in the USA.
but you will be able to eat better. organic food. farm fresh.
be sure to pay extra for a garage space. alternative parking is an aggravation after a while, once you figure out you can usually take public transportation to your job.

IPO's abound. If you play your cards right, you can hit it big in the region.
