huge cultural difference

no kidding

Everyone talks about how great places like SF and Seattle are because of the culture

From my experience the only thing culture means is the scent of piss and shite everywhere because people relieve themselves on the middle of the sidewalk, passed out strung out drug addicts everywhere, homeless everywhere, panhandlers begging for money everywhere, crime, and high prices.

Even if you are a left wing liberal and agree with the prevailing political attitudes and movements of the area i dont see how any of that is desirable

Not really I just told her I am just going to San Fran to interview lol. I don't know what will happen if they offer me though. It will be a tough decision.

Since you two are both early into your respective careers, I would recommend taking advantage of the lower cost of living in Houston and accumulate some wealth. Especially if you want to settle down together. The Bay Area is obscenely expensive for just about everything

1k in oakland won't get much. You could maybe share a place with a roommate for that much, but it will be small and/or dilapidated.

What are the salary differences?

The bay area is awesome IMO, including Oakland. But it will be a lot more of a culture shock than Houston and you will also be further from home.

Obviously that's not desirable, but if you look past that, San Francisco is a really awesome city, one that people travel from all around the world to visit. And FWIW every time I visit I get a kick out of the crazies on the street. It's part of the fun.

Not enough to make up for the higher cost of living. Go with Houston.

Buddy if you were getting scared and feared for your life in Seattle then you're going to be shaking in fear daily in Houston.

Don't forget to include California's 10% state income tax, vs. Texas' 0% income tax, in your monetary calculations.

if San Francisco, better find that passport to get there. Those nutjobs want to vote for succession out in California.

Whoa, so you're down with the hood. No worries if you grew up in New Orleans.

I would not move to the Bay Area unless I was working in tech or for a large tech firm, also I would only move there if I could work for 3 years and then leave with substantial saving, in other words I would need to be paid, a lot.

Use your extra disposable income from working in Houston to take the gf on nice trips to San Francisco.

Problem solved.

LINK: here's a good source on determining a COL comparison between places.

You mean unlike the totally sane people in Texas who of course have never talked about succession before?

No shite, because you are just visiting and dont have to deal with them everyday

As someone who walks 1.5 miles to and from work everyday it gets old really fast and its not so funny anymore

How long have you been with the girlfriend? If y'all have been together for awhile and you're serious about the relationship you shouldn't even be considering SF if she lives in Houston.

Also, can she come with you or do you not want her to?
