Negative. Relatively safe for a 3rd world country. My wife's family is from there and I spent a week with them a couple of years back. I'm sure like most cities/countries there are parts to avoid but I never once felt like there was a bad vibe in any of the towns or cities we visited.
In fact a quick search shows that in 2014 Nicaragua had 8 murders per 100k people while New Orleans had 38.7, so a country with over 6 million residents is drastically lower than a city with 390,000 residents.

Super easy due to all the gringo’s. Copa Airlines flies from NOLA to Quito, EC r/t for under $500. Cuenca is a short flight or take a bus. I booked a AirBnB in the historical district for $500 - if I rented a apartment all utilities included would be $350-$400 monthly.
FB has a few Cuenca & Equador pages- good luck!

Does your "housemate" plan to retire too or will he still work?

True - but if you want $500k to last 40 years, you're not drawing much more than $2k per month on a consistent basis - just sayin'...
Doesn't have to last 40 years. Just long enough for Social Security to kick in.

Ya it's El Salvador and Honduras that are messed up.
Flew through San Salvador on Avianca last year so I got to read the gory Central American newspaper.

The Philippines. Tons of expat Americans, everyone speaks English, great beaches and really cheap to live

The Spain article was kind of awesome. I think i could manage living along side the Mediterranean for the rest of my life pretty easily

Lots of positives for Americans who want to live in Spain. All kinds of cool shite going on there all the time too like the San Fermin festival but that's just the most famous one.
Lots of people are saying Belize because the primary language is English. Other than that it isn't an attractive place with its crime, disease, and gang activity.
