What country could I go retire, play golf everyday, and live comfortably with about $500k?

Your major task will be to live on the $500k until Social Security kicks in. If you are fine with living on a $20k annual income for the rest of your life, you are already set. There are many places where you can do this - it isn't rich living, but it's living.

You could even do this in rural America. You'd be barely scraping by, but with no family it's doable even if you don't qualify for disability benefits right away.

Venezuela...I hear all the women went on an extremely successful State sponsored diet. It's an entire country of O-T 10's.

Negative. Relatively safe for a 3rd world country. My wife's family is from there and I spent a week with them a couple of years back. I'm sure like most cities/countries there are parts to avoid but I never once felt like there was a bad vibe in any of the towns or cities we visited.

In fact a quick search shows that in 2014 Nicaragua had 8 murders per 100k people while New Orleans had 38.7, so a country with over 6 million residents is drastically lower than a city with 390,000 residents.

Yeah I was thinking of El Salvador

You must have never been to Singapore. It's very expensive to live there. And dang near impossible to retire there

You can live an "avg" lifestyle in Porto for $1000/mo including rent. This includes some eating out and "entertainment". And Porto is a great town with very friendly people, great inexpensive food, near the beach and mountains and an international airport with low cost carriers.
