re: Best overall luxury vehicle: Audi, BMW or Mercedes?

I've heard Audi has a proprietary computer system and it can be difficult to find an a outside mechanic to work on them. BMW and MB aren't what they use to be as far as quality goes. Nothing relatively cheap about working on any of them. OEM parts are just plain outrageous. I've owned BMW and MB. I drive infinities now and find them just as nice and more reliable than either MB or BMW.

Audi - BMW - Benz in that order depending on the class.
The 3-series BMW for an entry level small car. Overall Audi in mid-size & luxury. At the top, it's a choice between the Benz S class & BMW's 12 cylinder monster. Each has something to offer, but none are maintenance friendly. If it is a sports car, the story begins & ends with Porsche. If you haven't looked at them lately, best bang for the buck in a German car is VW. The loaded Passat in a hell of a car for the price.

This.
Just a Honda, but sweet.
Love my TL and God and finances willing I will just keep getting one after the other. May step up to RL one day. Maybe.
But just a Honda when getting fixed.

Stay away from Audis. Made by VW. Look and drive nice but same crappy quality.

If you are keeping the car more short tern the bmw is the way to go. All majntenace J's paid for for the first 50k miles. That is a great incentive. I prefer the bmw m cars but they are all great. Its a matter of style and driving preference. Bmw gets my vote because of the ability to get manual transmissions in more of the lineup. If j lived in colder climate the all wheel audi would interest me. My stigma with audis is I thought.a lot of metrosexuals drove them.

Only 1 "luxury" brand on that list

Mercedes have become quite "urban" lately

Mercedes and BMW are the best, mainstream examples IMO. If those two, I prefer Mercedes, but BMW's smaller, cheaper cars are better than similar Mercedes products.
I consider Lexus, and Cadillac to be a step below Mercedes.
Acura, Lincoln, Volvo, and Buick are mostly third tier. Not to take anything away from them....but with the exception of Volvo their cars are almost exclusively fancy versions of mainstream vehicles.

Go test drive a 2014 MDX with the advanced package and report back.

My mother just got the brand new, fully loaded MDX. That thing is fine.

Tier Board.
There are only luxury and near-luxury brands.
Lexus, cadillac, and Audi are certainly luxury brands.
Acura and Buick are considered by most as near luxury, although Acura can be considered the luxury brand of Honda. Acura suffers because of the lack of a V-8, RWD platform in their lineup.

Let me know when Acura makes a vehicle that's not a tarted up Honda and report back.
I'm not saying they are bad cars....but it's hard to put a fancy Honda in the same group as Mercedes or BMW. Buick, Lincoln, and Acura need a rear drive chassis that's not based on a mainstream car, IMO.

Its performance. Drive them near their limits and you will see a distinct difference. I for one think Acura makes a great product for the money. They are reliable and full of technology for the driver. They just don't have the same spirited driving capabilities. But for 95% of the population they are perfectly fine and a better value. I just happen to not be one of the 95% but I appreciate their engineering and quality.

why would we judge luxury autos by their peak performance abilities? that seems like what you'd judge a sports car on

I did a good bit of research on this subject in November and December. I was looking for a new SUV and my main one I was looking at was the X5. The X5 drove awesome but some of the problems that they have are bizarre (things like the self adjusting headlights getting knocked loose from pot holes and costing a lot to fix them).
I looked at a Audi Q7 and Q5 and I really liked both of them. I called a friend of mine who had an A7 and he said this about it, "It was great until he had the first problem and it cost him $4k to fix the A/C. Low maintenance for the most part and then you get slapped in the face with a giant bill.
The Acura MDX was surprisingly amazing. I liked it more than any other SUV drive-wise and comfort-wise. It was actually really roomy for backseat room and maintenance isn't bad since it is a Toyota.
My dad ended up buying an Infiniti JX35 and it is nice and roomy. I haven't driven it so I won't say a whole lot about it except from the looks standpoint.
