You are obviously a Democrat that has no problems with illegals.

Yea because Dallas has no Mexican people.

Austin itself I could never go back for the rest of my life and be okay with. The areas surrounding Austin are what make that city desirable.
Houston and Dallas are basically the same city now. If you live in any desirable part of either city(wealthy), you won't notice a difference.
The growth Houston has experienced in the past 5 years has been incredible.
The food scene is better in Houston than Dallas, and other than BBQ, there is maybe one or two restaurants in Austin I'm envious of.
I prefer Houston because this is where I was raised but I wouldn't be unhappy if I lived in Dallas-as much as it pains me to type that.

Can only chime in on Houston, but think current oil and gas markets are a long term positive for the city. Place was getting overcrowded as people poured in strictly for jobs. Construction market followed, and began overbuilding. Real estate, infrastructure, entertainment, everything. In 2-3 years, when energy markets are still nowhere near what they used to be, city should be in good shape with many construction projects finished and population growth slowing. Still a poorly designed city and not a specifically pretty place to visit, although it has its moments.

Hey Rummel..other Austinites,
Looks like we're officially moving to Austin. Flying there in a couple weeks to get a lease and lay of the land. We seem to be focusing on South Congress/Lamar/ whatever that area is.
This any better/worse than say Rosedale/Allandale/Hyde Park?
I've actually never been there, have maybe 2 friends there who are helping out. Looking at 2500 to 3000 a month rent before we buy.
Any advice, even negative appreciated.

I live in Travis Heights (SoCo area) and it's fine. Quiet area, walking distance to bars and restaurants, houses have character. Close to the airport and HWY 71 so it's relatively easy to get out of town.
I like the hyde park area. I would look there if your office is central or north.
2500-3000 will get you a good place even with crazy austin rent prices.

Whoa, quick reply late at night. Thanks
Her office will be around 6th and Congress.
We mess with Google Maps and put the times for rush hour and it puts things slightly over 20 minutes from the SoCo area. But we've heard the horrors of the Mopac so that's why we looked to that area.
I currently work from home so I just need stuff to do nearby so I get out the house on weekends to meet up with folks.
Seemed like that south area was good with Lamar Blvd, 1st Street and South Congress having things to do. Not to mention a grocery store under 10 minutes. HUGE because I prefer going a few times a week over doing 2 hour 400 dollar trips.

No worries, the dog is freaking out at the weather and keeping me up.

You'll want to find something south of town lake, North of Slaughter Ln. That'll make an easy commute avoiding any highway.

Everything is going to be red at rush hour. Austin only has north/south main roads, no east/west plus there are too many people here for the roads. Traffic is bad from 4-6. Just try to live as close to work as possible. The Mopacalypse is just making it worse right now.

You'll also want to find a place in between Mopac and I35. I like the area a few blocks off congress. Lamar is too busy and commercial for me to live there. The HEB on Congress and oltorff maybe the worst HEB ever but there are other options, I don't really go grocery shopping so take my opinion on that with a grain of salt.
If she's working DT and you can work from home I'd recommend looking around Travis heights, and the bouldin Creek area. They are central, nice, and quiet.

I've actually never visited Austin, but think I'd like it from the vibe I hear about it. But can't comment.
I've spent a good bit of time in Dallas an live in Houston. Dallas is just cleaner. Houston feels old and chappy in a lot of places. But I certainly don't mind it here. People are talking about Houston crime, and that may be true, but at least it's limited to certain areas unlike NOLA (I've got nothing against NOLA). One major drawback to Dallas is the "keeping up with the Jones's aspect". I'd go broke trying to bus my kids Range Rovers so they fit in at school and fake tits for the wife so she stands out while playing tennis at the club.
