Houston's food scene has been absolutely ridiculous lately. Austin has food trucks a plenty, but Houston has been churning out new great restaurants.

at that range, you'll be fine, even with the bloated pricing

you're getting alot of good advice, Travis Heights is a great starting point. SoCo is nice, and I agree, stay north of Slaughter. Hyde Park is great, but there's still pockets of undergrads strewn throughout there, not sure if that matters to you. But that's not to say its west campus, there are many very quiet streets and areas, just be aware. It's not nearly as prevalent as 15 years ago, the market has priced many of the college kids out of the area.

South Lamar has blown up so much in the last 3 years, it's hardly recognizable. The good is that there's a shite ton of things to do and places to go, along with an overabundance of new residential real estate. The bad is that there is no fricking way Lamar Blvd is able to handle that many cars on the road. If you were trying to get to 6th & Congress, you'd have to learn the back roads like Mary & Heather St to get over and avoid Barton Springs intersection if at all possible during rush hour.

One thing you should at least look at is Tarrytown and Clarksville. To me that would be the best 2 neighborhoods to live in, but there's really not much rental property that exists, but there is some. I would also look around Exposition up to Windsor, and that area west of Mopac. Once again, very, very little in the way of property for rent, but thats the sort of neighborhood you could probably leave your front door wide open and not lose any sleep

To visit, Austin
To live, Dallas

I lived in Austin 20 years ago and peeps were complaining about the growth back then. It's just silly congested now...

If you're a millionaire who does not have to work, Austin. If you are person who needs a steady job, Houston or Dallas.

Don't say there here, you will have people accusing you of joking or being crazy.

But seriously... Tarrytown, Deep Eddy, Clarksville, Pemberton, Bryker, Rosedale, Oakmont, even Allendale... basically zero crime, right in the mix of things, can get around to work and entertainment without using the highways.

It is. But the drawbacks are that it is student-y still, even with the prices soaring, and the lots are small. It is charming, safe, and great location for work and play though.

Austin is growing in town again. Everybody moving from burbs back into town. Odd mix. You have lilly white families walking around neighborhoods they were probably pulling murder victims from 10 years ago to get to food and taco trucks. goes from nice home to vacant lot to boarded up crack house. To their credit Austin is handling their shite though. Any house that looks is sketchy is fenced and shuttered prepping for demo or is already being torn down.

Talking about the downtown area BTW. Headed out on 71 or is it Cesar Chavez that it is called there?

The HEB on Congress and oltorff maybe the worst HEB ever but there are other options

It is That was my store when I lived off of Congress. It's one of the last of the old Pantry-type HEBs and it is too small for the area it serves.

That is a great place for people watching though. Freak central.

I like going to the store several time a week because I cook a lot, and my area is perfect for that. I have the old Randall's on 35th/38th for normal everyday stock stuff and basic ingredients and the Central Market at 38th/Lamar for special ingredients, produce, good meat/fish. Central Market > Whole Foods by a mile.

I've lived in Houston and Dallas and got to Austin frequently on business. Preferred Dallas, but could live in Houston again.

That's like the SEC west in Football. All are really nice places and I would live in any in a heartbeat compared to the 22. I've got a friend who works in Austin and has a house in Baton Rouge to come back as often as possible

Yeah, you are talking about the East Side. The new (as in within the past 10 years) "hip" area. It's "transitional". The closer you get to the river the more it has "transitioned". The people who had been living there in the past "transitioned" to Pflugerville. A lot of why 6th Street ceased to be what it what in the past is because the "pretty people" switched to Rainey St. and the music scenesters moved their scene to the new clubs on the East Side.

Yep. I heard that on here about Pflugerville. Sucks for Pflugerville. I had friends who lived there. glad they sold.

"Dirty Sixth" now. I heard that term many times last week. Rainey is awesome and a cool idea though.

It was odd to see what would be suburbanites walking past a couple of vacant lots to get to food trucks. Very Mexican area too. I mean it IS Austin, but I mean more Mexican that normal.
