i would argue that if you want to live along I35 or east of it and don't want a big town, Temple's the best bet. not exciting, not tons of things to do, but you're 2 hours from everything else without the traffic, crime, or high cost of living.

Only other ones (that are obviously better places) are New Braunfels and San Marcos. They're great, i just don't know if i want that kind of tourism in my town ALL. THE. TIME.

Texas State sluts would be the dealmaker at the end of the day if i were unmarried.

Teddy, Rummel, RedFoxx, other Austinites -

There is a 1/3 chance that I end up in Austin in the fall of next year for grad school at UT. I was there about 5 years ago for a few days but haven't been back since. Where should we start looking at housing?

We are good in small spaces (currently in a small apt in downtown Denver). Just looking for something quiet, good part of town, walkable/bikeable, etc.

I have heard the rental market down there is crazy like it is here in Denver.

Austin has become pretty horribly overrated

Has been overrated for almost 5 years. It is overcrowded, liberal, and packed with homeless and Californians. Fun place to visit, but definitely one of the worst places to live in Texas. Hell, I barely consider it Texas.

Houston is massively underrated.

It's probably comparable to Denver. It's not as crazy as SF, NYC, or Boston though. They're throwing up new stock as fast as they can though - that's the only thing keeping it (rental rates) from just going gonzo.

Meh. Downtown is pretty damned cool, but it is too expensive to live. By Texas standards.

I at anyone who goes near Austin without knowing how liberal it is. You just didn't do ANY homework.

it's really my least favorite big city. don't get me wrong, it's fun, there's a lot to do, it just has too many negatives for me.

a couple of years ago, i'd have called that DFW envy, but i've started going there to see some family that moved to Crosby (lolz @ Crosby) as well as for work, and other things with the family. it's grown on me a good bit. Downtown and galleria are fun places.

The traffic and tolls suck balls though.

Overcrowded? Yes.

Liberal? Not really. It's centrist or evenly slightly right compared to the rest of America. It's liberal for Texas.

Packed with homeless? No more so than any other city its size and less than Houston.

Californians? Yes. This much is true. It's not fun getting beat out on house bids by them when they have a zillion dollars in cash equity from their place in Cali. But the funny thing is they tend to go back after a few years once they come to the full realization that it's not "a pocket of California in Texas" but just "a more liberal and pretty Texas... in Texas". Only fellow Austinites will probably understand what I mean about the "disappointed Californian" phenomenon, but it's a pretty funny stereotype once you've seen it a few times.

I don't recognize Texas as a part of the American states, so that is an irrelevant comparison. It is pretty damn liberal and shitty and I have never seen so many punchable faces in my life than one evening out in downtown Austin

we have a guy we have been doing business with for a few years in San Diego just lose his job (great guy, his company was just cutthroat and he is not.) We offered him a job in San Antonio, where i'm based out of.

He was getting something like 120k and we offered him somewhere in the 80s. he thought we were nuts until he saw what he can get for a house @500k in SA vs. SD. He said the same houses for sell around 500k in SA would be 1MM+ in California. if he sells his house now, he'll probably be able to put 200k down.

ETA: he's pretty conservative and hispanic. so he'll do great in SA.

well yeah.... SD's awesome. one of my favorite towns in the US. he and i have had a great time there when we're visiting for travel.

but he is evaluating his takehome pay there making 100k+ vs 80K here and cost of living and it's pretty compelling.

Exactly what i am saying! If your frame of reference is support for Texas secession you will think Austin is Moscow on the Colorado. But if you are from the West Coast and come there to live you are freaked out by how conservative it is. I've seen/known/understand both scenarios/people.

outside of the immediate CBD, nothing in Austin is really "walkable." Bike, yes, there are way too many of those fricking bike lanes sucking up valuable street real estate. If you're one of those, you'll be OK.

there's busses and stuff, in 17 years there, I never once rode any sort of public transportation, I dont know much about it.

but if you're in grad school, assumingly on campus, outside of the large student based rental options in west campus, there really isnt much in affordable rental housing within reasonable distance without driving a vehicle. You may find something just east of disch faulk, but that whole area is being gentrified at the speed of light.

outside of that, I know there's a ton of apartments up on Far West that is packed with grad students becasue they run the dillo all day and night back and forth (the dillo is just a series of city busses that focus on traveling to and from campus for students)

I would look in the west campus area, it's pretty much all student housing. And walking/biking distance to campus.

I wouldn't recommend doing an apt downtown in Austin.
1. It's too expensive
2. Who moves to Austin to live in a highrise? They litter the skyline and are turning austin into Dallas, but that's a different discussion.

Why no love for Midland in here? Van Horn is a pretty cool spot. How could we forget Burleson??

true

Oh boy, yeah, real can of worms there, for sure!!!

I remember when people freaked the f out about the Frost building when it was being built. Newer residents have no idea what a contentious issue that thing was, and it's not even one of the taller buildings anymore!

Thanks for the tips.

Driving isn't really an issue - I just prefer to bike everywhere.

My main concern is that I just don't want to be in a super rowdy college apt area. I am 6 years out of school, married, and want something a bit more chill.

I'm doing a school visit in a few months and I'll check out these areas.
