We took my dad to DC for a week when he turned 70 in 2001. We got Metro passes, and rented a Georgetown condo near the Watergate building. My dad, and I, spent three days going through The Smithsonian. We went to Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, saw a show at the Kennedy Center, and ate at a bunch of neat places.
My mom was still working, and actually worked some while we were going through the museum. We went with her to one of the Louisiana Congressman's offices, and took the underground train from his office to The Capital. I don't think we would have been allowed to do all of that now. This was in March of 2001, before the 9/11/01 attack.
Maryland made the Final Four that year. The day after they won their regional, we took the Metro out there, caught a bus to campus, and bought a couple of Final Four tee shirts with all four teams logos. It was fun seeing how excited all of the Maryland fans were.
Being able to spend the week with my parents was a great thing. Doing what he wanted to do (going through the Smithsonian) made it really special. Both of my parents are still going strong. He had a stroke in 2016, so they have cut back of traveling. They spent over a week riding historical trains in Colorado last month though. It was something he wanted to do, and his neurosurgeon, approved, so they went.
Enjoy whatever time you can spend with them.

It's page 2 and nobody has said "hookers and blow". I'm stunned.

I lost my dad this year he was 83( my best friend and my hero also) it’s really hard to buy for them later in life. My dad was a huge LSU fan as am I. The best gift I got him that I think he liked the most probably was a brick near Mikes cage. It was actually an anniversary present (50th mom loved it too) I think it was around $500 and it’s one of the bigger pavers( their names ,year they were married). He took a picture of it and framed it. He never went to LSU , he was drafted when he was 18 and served in Korea

A man 70 years old this year has a 94% chance of living to age 80, and a 86% chance of living to age 90.
Damn Asian-Americans are skewing the stats for the rest of us.
OP:
More information is needed, as Owlie knows better than me, not all 70 year-old men are the same.

Your Time...just spend a day with him and put together a book of memories that you could both look through together and remember all the great times in his life. Have conversations about everything he can remember growing up. Believe me, one day you will want to know as much about him as a young man as you can when he is no longer around. I'm wishing he has many happy years with you and your family so please enjoy his company. I wish I still had the chance to celebrate on more special day with my own dad.

Extended vacation with kids and grandkids. It can be somewhere moderately priced or even off season because the where is not important.

Gather up as many family pictures as you can and make a dvd album or even get an album video made.

A trip of a lifetime.
Could be hobby related, like a golf trip or historical.
Grand Canyon with family if he’s never been there.

THIS. Us old men just don't need anything but time with our family. A scrap book thru his life is a very big plus.
