Benson vs Bowers shows insanity of car dealership business

LINK
Matt Bowers wants to move his Chevy Dealership (the old Bryan Chevrolet) from Airline near Kenner to the old KMart lot on Veterans near Lakeside Mall.
Gayle Benson has filed a complaint because this would mean more competition.
Here’s the funny thing. The current dealership is 2.6 miles from Benson’s place. This new location would be 4.8 miles away., so 2 miles further away.. but on Veterans. The new spot has more traffic pass by than the old spot.
Banner Chevy is fighting also, saying this will also cut into his business.
I’ve never purchased a vehicle from any of these three people. But the protectionism and entitlement in the dealership world is insane.

Dealerships are insanely scummy. The fact that LA still doesn't allow teslas to sell directly to customers is wild

Why would this be challenged? Do they let fast food restaurants file complaints when another moves in down the street?

Did you miss the part where it's Gayle Benson?

Dealerships need to collapse. Their use is gone. Set up maintenance shops where they stood and be done.

Let them cannibalize each other. Competition among the stealerships would probably give way to fix and deal fixing.

What Gayle going do with all that money. Geez

Mat Bowers can suck a dick... His service centers are terrible...
Side note: Really Surprised Wal-Mart didn't try to purchase that property, the closest WM to that area is the one in Elmwood, and the rest of them are in Kenner.

GM kinda sucks for approving it.

Why can’t we just purchase the vehicle directly from the company?
There is no logical argument for the current system beyond the “it would result in lost jobs”.

Considering the protectionism in Louisiana it’s not that surprising— just read up on St. Joseph’s Abbey fight with the Louisiana state board of funeral directors and embalmers over making affordable caskets.

Wait so you can just file a complaint when competition gets too close?

Absolutley. If you own a franchise of a major food chain, there are plenty of regulations about where you can locate. Your franchise contract probably specifies where you can be in relation to other same-brand stores but may also contain language about competitors, traffic levels, etc...
In the 1990's there was a major lawsuit by Subway franchisees because they felt the corporate parent was allowing too many new franchisees to move into the territory of the existing stores.
I don't doubt that new car stores have similar agreements with their OEMs.

Service is where dealerships have better margins anyway

I miss the days seeing salesmen sweat outside while smoking cigarette after cigarette

People often use this as a justificaiton for letting the OEMs sell direct, and that's going to have the opposite effect.
Consider the current situation: scummy car dealers like Bowers and Benson and Ray Brandt (and six others) are all competing for your business in Greater New Orleans. If you really want to shop hard, you can go to Houston, Baton Rouge, or Jackson and try your luck there. Eventually you will find a deal you like and hopefully the dealer doesn't screw you too bad on the financing/lease and paperwork. In this case you were able to pit the dealers against each other, and they all came up with slightly differnet offerings that might fit your needs better.
If you wanted a red F150, one dealer maybe offered you a better price on a maroon F150 and anothe dealer might've had a better residual on a lease but it was a red Silverado.. you have lots of choices.
Now consider buying from Ford. You walk in, give your name, test drive a truck or two. Ford offers you three options. You don't like them and decide to try another dealer, maybe go to Baton Rouge.
Your name is already in the CRM and they have a copy of the same three offers, pick whatever one you want. Same offers. Same thing if you're not happy with the service and repairs. Who do you complain to, a local chain or a faceless regional manager in Detroit?
