A new survey by CompareCards shows that 51% of all wedding party members felt pressured to spend money as part of the big day.

So what are bridesmaids and best men spending on? Thirty-percent said they spent the most on attire, followed by 29% on a bachelor or bachelorette party. Overall, one-third of people said they actually regret how much they spent.

So who’s to blame? The Bride. Forty-eight percent of people blamed the bride for pressure to spend on the event, while 35% blamed the spending on pressure from other bridal-party members. Only 21% blamed the groom.

Overall, if you are getting married soon, be careful what you ask for. CompareCards says 37% of people have actually declined an invitation to be in a wedding party thanks to the price tag.

I've been in several weddings and the only one that I spent quite a bit on was my brothers. That's only because we had his bachelor party in Vegas. What's the most you've ever spent?

i have been super happy to just miss the cut in most of my friend's weddings. however i'm a groomsman of my best friend currently. wouldn't do it for many other people, honestly.

to me, it really depends on the wedding

I wouldn't trade the experience of being a groomsman in one of my best friends' weddings for anything. The whole weekend in New Orleans for the wedding plus the long weekend in Vegas where we were all broke, but still had a blast are memories I will cherish. Definitely worth every cent.

I’ve served in 20+ weddings and have never looked at it as a financial burden. We had some pretty extravagant bachelor parties so I’m not sure which was the most expensive

Absolutely true.

For Scruffy’s wedding, he is picking only family members and buying everyone’s suits. Gonna be blue suits which can be reworn.

Tuxes are a waste of money.

I’ve been the best man in a few weddings. The only financial burden is you’re on the hook for the hotel. If your friends aren’t sacks of shite and pay you for their room then you have the exact same expenses as everyone else.

Weddings in general are out of control.

Between the 3 month salary engagement ring, the destination proposal trip, the bridezilla phenomenon, the pre-wedding bachelor/bachelorette destination vacations, the destination wedding vacations, and all other price tag inflating “must haves”, it’s like everybody has gone crazy.

Save your money to buy a house. Focus your energies on a successful marriage. Be considerate of your family and friends who want to join in celebrating this big moment but who cannot afford their water bill much less a destination wedding.

Sure, if you act like every wedding is:

It’s definitely aggravating to spend all that money on the different parties, trips, and wedding attire and gift

Went on the initial visit to price our tux’s with a friend back in April. For like ~$30 we just ended up getting Jos. A Bank suits. If I ever get married that seems to be the better route to go.

Ah, this week's variation of "the OT hates everything about weddings thread"...

Weddings are money pits.

The one I went to this past Saturday was well over $100K. The flowers were probably 1/3rd of that tally. They held it at what's likely the most prestigious country club in all of ATL and had a full buffet and bar with top shelf liquor and wines as old as 40 years old. They hired one of the more prominent cover bands in the area and the bride and groom were driven away in a 1960's Rolls Royce.

Granted, the girl's mother is a doctor and her father passed away a year ago - boatload of life insurance $$$ - but I thought it was ridiculously expensive.

I can't fathom spending more than $40K on a party.

Just being in any wedding is a financial/time burden.

Because that's a lot of money to you. That amount is nothing to a lot of people.

If someone is worth multi millions, who cares if they want to throw a party that costs $100k?

It's high, but at the end of the day, it's their money.

I don't get why people try to bash others for how they spend their own money.
