i tend to disagree. The only reason not to lift heavy is if you can't. Believe me if you could still do it you would do it.

I'm 42 and will lift heavy ( well heavy for me )until I can't, nothing to do with getting paid or not.

I think it depends on your body type. If you are a a naturally big guy as in you will weigh 230 plus one way or another (250+ if you are tall), sure there probably aren't many drawbacks to pushing your strength to where you can always "lift heavy".

As someone who isn't naturally very big, I would look like a man in a perpetual mid-life crisis if I consistently trained enough to lift heavy enough to be competitive.

If I can stay benching my bodyweight and my bodyweight stays 210 or less, that's fine by me.

This is my category and I usually do 3 sets of 12-15 at the untrained level. I go to the gym regularly but I almost always go for reps over weight.

I could definitely do the 175 a few times.

Could maybe do 215 under ideal conditions. Would have to grab someone from the gym to spot.

I weigh 205 and I can bench over 300. I would not call myself an advanced lifter.

Certainly can still lift heavy, work out daily and that triple was a couple months ago. It’s also extremely hard on your joints doing so and not worth wearing them down just to impressive jerkoffs like yourself in the gym.

I’ll keep doing large sets at 225-255-275 and be just fine.

This makes me feel much better about myself. I've always had the perception that bench should be at least 1.5x of your body weight. I've only done that a couple of times in my life, probably not in the past few years.

190, am currently benching 205 for 3x5 sets. Could probably get 220 on a one rep max with a spotter.

i weigh about 165.

i have literally never in my life attempted to max out on Bench Press

HS football my weight and position group requires me to lift 110lbs 3 times.
I did that, but honestly couldn’t even guess how much more weight or how many more reps i could have done then.
Haven’t touched a weight since ‘95.

Definitely intermediate. How in the hell could you weigh 198 and only bench 135? Sheesh.

Someone who has never benched before (or pushups) would struggle with about 80lbs. I remember my first time benching as a 210 fatass and shaking with only the bar.
