Those who use Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance will likely soon have to pay out of pocket for anesthesia services, should their surgeries fall outside a specific time limit. This applies to patients in New York State, Missouri and Connecticut.
Officials with BCBS announced that this would begin with claims processed on or after Feb. 1, 2025. According to BCBS, “We will utilize the CMS Physician Work Time values to target the number of minutes reported for anesthesia services.” Any surgery that goes beyond the set limit, will no longer be covered.

They gotta cut costs to beef up security for their execs without having to pay the execs any less.

Insurance companies, with health insurance being the absolute worst, need a major reckoning
No one can clearly state what the frick their coverage actually covers (including the insurance company's own employees when you ask for a detailed explanation).

My co-pay for CT scans and other common radiology procedures went from $50 to $150 for the 2025 physical year

Dumb for multiple reasons but not surprised.
Anesthesiologists don't get to control how long a procedure takes. So dumb to put it on a time limit for reimbursement on something they don't control.
Essentially though they are trying to force Anesthesia into a bundled payment like they do every other speciality. E.g. currently your surgeon gets paid the same for a certain procedure regardless on if it's the easiest one ever or it's one that took 3x as long on some morbidly obese patient.
So by doing this, insurance is going to ultimately pass the cost the insured. They'll cap their payments to Anesthesia, Anesthesia will balance bill the patient for the extra reimbursement. Patient will be mad at the rich doctor and not the insurance company. Congress will have to pass another law saying balance billing isn't allowed. Insurance companies win, profits continue as scheduled. Everyone else will continued to get screwed.

Their CEO might want to reconsider this decision after yesterday.

That's the easy part. It covers whatever you don't actually need.

Agreed. The"news" keeps painting the United Health CEO as some angelic person. I doubt this very much. Pretty sure he has caused a lot of trauma in a lot of lives.

What would the US be like if there were no insurance companies? Wasn’t there a time when they didn’t exist? Where would all the money that’s paid to insurance companies go if they didn’t exist?
