I realize the O-T frowns upon hearing good news, especially any good news involving Baton Rouge, but I thought this afternoon's news about the Baton Rouge job market might be interesting to some posters.

Led by a spike in the construction sector, the Baton Rouge region has hit a record for total jobs for the second time in 2023, according to data from the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.
The metro region posted 426,200 jobs in September, a 13,300-job climb from the same month last year, according to the latest available BRAC statistics. That’s a 3,800-job jump from the 422,400 jobs the area boasted in March, a record at the time.
As was the case in March, the construction sector drove much of the growth in September, BRAC said. That sector skyrocketed by 9,000 jobs in a year, a 19.4% growth rate from 2022 to 2023. Private education and health services also posted a year-over-year again of 2,500 jobs.
“With nearly 20% more construction jobs than the Capital Region had last year, the Baton Rouge Metro ranks first among the nation’s 358 metros for job growth in construction,” Jake Polansky, BRAC’s manager of economic and policy research, said in a statement.

I like good news. Thanks for posting.
Seems like there is a lot of industrial projects that will be happening between BR and Nola over the next few years as well.

Where's this big "spike" in construction in BR occurring?

Latoya is killing it.
Flying first class to Kenya and creating jobs.
SWB needs to take notes on how to win like that

I don't know that it's a "spike" as much as it is a resumption of growth following the COVID shut down in 2020-2021.
I know Exxon has announced within the last few months two expansions in their refinery and plastics plants and several plants in Ascension Parish have announced expansion plans. I don't remember the details.
I spoke to my car mechanic a month or so ago and he told me it's impossible for him to find qualified mechanics at wages he can afford because all of the good mechanically inclined young workers are being taken by the plants along the river.
Just anecdotally but he's been in business for over 30 years and he claims it's the tightest job market for mechanics he's ever experienced.

There needs to be a statewide push in our education system at an early age (middle school) to give students the option to learn a trade. It would help out in the long run so damn much.

Is there any stats available to see how BR or EBR is doing?

It's been tried. Students aren't interested and it's hard to find a trades educater willing to teacher willing to teach high school kids, much less middle school shitheads.

quote:I'm currently teaching English in Japan, and my high school is a technology school where every student focuses in either machinery, electronics, or robotics. The students are hired directly out of school into well-paying jobs with big and small companies, and every student who has graduated since COVID has been hired. That would be a boon to both students and industry in Louisiana if industry would support it and the students could handle it.
