The tram was unnecessary and dumb. That said, the plan to expand CATS services to "fill the role" is equally as asinine. CATS is a model of dumb leadership, self-dealing, and inefficiency. The only thing it really does now is shuttle brokedicks around town while stealing money from the BR taxpayers to do it. And they can't even execute the ONE opportunity they have to generate significant outside revenue...transportation to LSU football games.

Traffic and parking on gamedays is already a big issue. The buses could provide a great service and fill a need. Unfortunately, the program is run by a seemingly endless supply of retards to make what should be a great program an inefficient pain in the arse. If you've ever taken the bus from downtown on gamedays you quickly realize they don't even have a fricking dedicated route! Then again, to be fair, the BR city police don't even have a clear post-game traffic plan. It changes every week.

At $10 per person, that service could generate revenue potentially up to $50,000 per game if run efficiently. It's not far fetched to think that they could get 5,000 people in the city of Baton Rouge to take the bus to an event that will draw in at least 80k fans.

Isn't there a bus route between LSU and Downtown now that has a low ridership.

Or, hear me out here, maybe we just have 2 dedicated CATS busses running from LSU to Downtown on nights and weekends as a proof of concept.

I don't think there was any demand. Especially now that Uber is a thing.

No one, especially middle-upper class LSU students, want to ride the bus downtown with the bums/sketchy people.

So having a Tram between LSU and Downtown is a deal breaker?

Of course not. But, it is a vehicle (pun intended) for growth. In addition to college students, it would be a draw for young professionals just out of college who like to go downtown. It would also make a statement that BR is finally making progress. There are more reasons to do it but you get the point.

This decision illustrates how short-sighted our "leadership" in Louisiana can be.

Exactly. The tram was probably a waste of money too but replacing it with buses? Lol.

So put a cop on every single trip, still would be cheaper than a tram system.

I also enjoy how you guys believe a tram would somehow not have bums, but a bus would.

I'm not convinced. 10 bus stops payjg overtime to the cops. I could easily see that being a million/year expense. Especially after seeing the money some of those BR cops were making doing the dui checkpoints and such.

Probably because there isn't much worth stealing from college kids

Truth. I love the NYC subway but it’s the reason homeless bums are in areas of the city they have no business being in and cause problems.

And there are homeless everywhere in nola, and they dont have a mass transit (i know the streetcar, but the homeless are everywhere not near a streetcar as well)

Having a similar connection would help for people going to or working for LSU to live and work in the area, could potentially assist greatly for LSU games and traffic, attract commercial businesses, attract residential development, and be an assistance in getting things rolling in the area.

NOW, wait until it’s developed and it’s too late for these kinds of moves. It’s similar to the way BR builds shite, and then the city has to come up with ways to get to it. Forward thinking cities build roads and areas with a plan in mind, and then commercial and residential develop around the plan like there was an actual game plan in place. They don’t just wait for it to happen, and then if and when it does, react to it with knee jerk answers. That’s the problem with BR and surrounding areas. Take AP. They’re building subdivisions off of old country roads like tree limbs, and all of it has to funnel to those old two lane highways and now all of a sudden the traffic is out of the box stupid and people are actually scratching their heads, instead of building an infrastructure first to support that development.

We never learn, even though BR itself is there for you to reference what happens with no plans in place.

It's also the predominant reason why NYC and it's population flourishes. The good usually outweighs the bad.

I was not advocating for a tram both are equally terrible ideas. They’d come out cheaper just buying a few large vans and offering (free) rides limited to people with a student ID.

City buses in general have a negative stigma to them that a tram wouldn't have.

Not saying it's an accurate stigma or that a tram wouldn't have the same issues regardless, but it's true.

I hate to break it to you but part of public transportation is providing transportation for people who cant afford thier car or other mode of transportation.

I'm still waiting to see if the Nicholson corridor develops as well as hoped. There is still a good deal of blight between LSU and downtown, and current city leadership views anything that remotely looks like gentrification as being racist. I'm sorry, but I'm sick to death of the whole "if it doesn't benefit NBR then we can't have it" argument. Nobody wants to go to NBR, and the people that live there won't be paying for it, so why do they even have a say in the matter?

A dynamic and progressive city, which BR has proven it is not, has to deal with growing pains.

Who would use it? LSU students going to bars at night? Gameday transportation for a few times a year? Take Uber or Lyft.
