Exactly.
The City can't maintain the stuff it has now. The tram would come with lots of extra costs other than the initial construction (maintenance of tram, maintenance of tracks, payroll, retirement, health insurance, sporadic lawsuits, etc). How much additional ANNUAL operations funding was planned to be budgeted to offset those costs?
By some of y'alls logic, Bunkie would turn into Paris over night with a subway system! Baton Rouge doesn't need a tram system anymore than Bunkie needs one.

If Baton Rouge were LSU, there wouldn’t be anything too good for our great city in our assent to laying claim to #1. Our facilities would be world class, our architecture the same, and we would have the best money could buy. We would never allow our roads to remain in disrepair or grass to reach one’s own belt loops, and would cringe at the thought of plowing down beautiful trees to make way for some cookie cutter bullshite. When attracting the best talent to commit to locating here, we would do everything to impress. but alas, we have settled for Baton Rouge as it is, and expect nothing great can ever come from her, save perhaps through LSU itself where we place all of our hopes and aspirations for greatness.
That’s really the sad state of affairs in the old Red Shtick.

The tram would hopefully help to gentrify the neighborhoods immediately off of Nicholson that are currently hood. The idea was between the Tram, the new apartments going up north of LSU, the kids museum on Park, and the Electric Depot project they would sqeeze the out the ghetto from all sides and essentially gentrify that entire stretch south of downtown and west of Park Blvd. The Electric Depot along with several other housing developments are part of the plan to also gentrify as much as possible between Eugene and I-110 North of Government.
Also, there's that big empty parcel across from Magnolia Mound that a bank owns (they siezed it when the developer went belly-up). They supposedly still plan to go forward with the massive mixed use project, but were waiting to see if the city was going to move forward on the tram first.

Good to see you still fighting the unwinnable fight.
The extension of the the streetcar on Canal and Carrollton has really transformed Mid-City in New Orleans. Along with the the Greenway as well. It is now a real place to hangout and live with awesome restaurants and bars. Twenty years ago it was a decaying and dying part of the city.

Have you noticed who is running LSU?
We hired Ed Orgeron to be the football coach
The branch of LSU that makes the most money and is worth the most just made the worst hire, on paper, in maybe college football history

Baton Rouge is stuck in a constant loop.
We want to progress as a city, but change is scary.
We’re ready to change the city (St. George), but we’re going to stop progress.
I think BR will become a better place over time. I truly do. But I think everywhere else will become better at a faster rate, leaving BR in the dust.

Well, one thing I know for certain is that at least Ed loves LSU and wants the absolute best for LSU. If we all had that same feeling for BR we wouldn’t even hesitate at doing whatever we could to develop that which sits directly outside the gates to LSU, an area thousands of visitors pass through every year and witness what we think of it.

Oh well thats all I need to hear. Lets hire a completely unqualified guy for a couple million dollars a year to run a football program, who Forbes says would be worth almost a billion dollars on the open market, because he loves the school.
Your analogy wasnt good.

I’m sorry Jones, but the older I get the less importance it plays in my life. I still pull for them, but it’s just not the be all end all it once was for me. I do hope it gives you all you want it to though.

Its the least important its ever been in my life. Ive given up my season tickets and my family donates nothing to the program anymore. If they want to fleece the fans of money by doing stupid shite, have fun with that
Nice backhanded comment though

So we are going to compare Houston situation with Baton Rouge's situation?
Doesn't have to be. Build that area up and it would attract more people to live on that side of town.
That's all anyone is saying.
And in my opinion would help attract more students if the surrounding area was nice. It should be being built up that way instead of it keep going further and further down Burbank.

So it's better to depend 170 million tax payer dollars to attract developers to build down Nicholson to attract students than let private developers build down Burbank?
I'm sorry, that makes no sense.

I knew damn well BR had no desire for a vibrant downtown or a way to connect LSU to Downtown and make it a viable community worth investing in. This place is so far behind the eight ball it’s ridiculous. Small town, small minds, water is wet.
People don't realize how something like this can be a catalyst for development.

This is true.
Unfortunately, the City can't afford it right now. That is just being financially responsible.
Another analogy: Baw buys an Aston Martin to pick up OT 10s instead of fixing the roof on his double wide.

Exactly, plus no one has demonstrated that this project is really feasible. I haven't seen any hard numbers as to riders, financing, and who is going to operate it and how that is going to be financed.

The source of at least 70% (the rest is Valley Park, that one section 8 complex in Tigerland, Downtown East, and Gardere), and possibly as much as 90%, of the crime around campus, downtown, the Garden District, and Southdowns originates in that neighborhood between downtown and LSU. By converting that to students, you essentially eliminate the primary source of crime that actually impacts contributing members of society and tourists to BR.
Developing flood-prone, swampy Burbank does nothing for you.
