Baton Rouge is trying to improve Lee Drive - good luck to them!

This is one of the most NIMBY stretches in the whole city, but it's also still a rural two lane cross section with no sidewalks, no turn lanes, and horrific traffic tie ups every time someone has to make a left turn.
So long as they don't cut down the trees, I'm in support of it. But you know the neighborhood will have a element that seeks to squash the project entirely instead of trying to negotiate for additional features (decorative light poles, subsurface drainage, buried power lines) for a project that might benefit everyone.
This is the typical cross sections proposed (preliminary):

The current plan for Lee Drive is to build a center turning lane, making the entire stretch of the road from Perkins to Highland three lanes total.

Bicycle lanes and sidewalks are also on the list of changes to expect. To improve safety for pedestrians, the city-parish will also look into options for better lighting along the corridor.
“We’re also going to look at improving a lot of the lighting because if we’re going to do sidewalks and bike lanes we want to be sure people feel comfortable walking out there when they want to do that," said Raiford.

The current state of Lee drive is why I'd never live in Southdowns.

I thought it was called Takeaknee Drive now?

Great neighborhood. But they need to do something about improving traffic and aesthetics on Lee Drive.

Good luck with that.
Outside of eminent domain to grab a ton of land, either people’s yards or whole houses, I don’t see this happening.

So still two lanes but with a frickup middle? This is going to end poorly.

Hell … would have to be whole houses… it’s more realistic to find a way to funnel all the traffic to Keniworth or Staring

They are just adding a center lane and some sidewalks. Shouldn't be too much additional space, right?

If anyone thinks SWB or her black successor is gonna pour money into Lee Drive, they’re nuts. How many different road projects have been discussed l? And for how long?
:we’re waiting gif:
How bout just syncing the existing traffic signals in EBR- hell, just Airline Hwy? that would be a start.

I'm guessing there would be cutouts in the medians for turning like the neutral ground in NO.

Yeah.. they've been talking about widening Lee Drive for years, and I always assumed people's property is why it has yet to happen.
As someone who has to use Lee Drive daily since my neighborhood connects to it, I would love to see it clear up some. But I also hate construction traffic. There are numerous streets in town that give me far more anger than Lee, so I'm indifferent.

That's what they did with Staring and now the road is so close that I can see what people are eating for dinner

Trying to turn from the shopping center at Staring just below Perkins is godawful.

the residents of lee drive will love that!

I feel like they can do what is being proposed without taking homes. Looks like about 28’ from centerline of road to back edge of sidewalk. No house is that close. They will need to acquire ROW though.
The project is fully funded by MOVEBR. $35M. So I think it’s gonna happen.
ETA: on second look, the typical section with the median takes up more space. Looks like 37’ or so to back edge of sidewalks. So idk, maybe they will need to acquire homes too…

Four words: Government Street Road Diet. Go take a look at it. If it's any indication, this will take years longer than planned, look far worse than what is sold, and create as many problems as it attempts to fix. The roundabout at Lobdell is the only improvement I've seen from that project. The center plantings are trash-covered shambles. Many of the curbs are already broken. And every jalopy that breaks down, accident, and school entrance causes huge backups.

Why no turn lane from the bridge northbound to Tupelo St?
If you're taking land for a median, bike paths and sidewalks then go ahead and take another 10 feet for a center lane.
I guess we'll fix this with MovEBR2060.

Staring is 4 lanes with sidewalks and a large grass median. Much wider than what they want to do with Lee.

People don't realize how wide the easements are on some of these streets.
The easement on Lee between the bridge and Perkins is 60' wide. Currently, Lee is 24' feet wide from white stripe to white stripe. There's 36 feet of easement left over for sidewalks, expanded lanes, utilities, etc... currently unused but usually maintained by the owner of the frontage.
EBR Assessor GIS
You should look up your houses and see where the property line is on the map, and then go locate your front corners and see how far off the road your land actually starts. It may surprise you.

Staring is 4 lanes with a median with turn lanes at intersections.
