Handful of homes, businesses needed to make way for I-10 widening in Baton Rouge

The state will need to buy nearly two-dozen properties along I-10 as it expands the highway system through the region’s most bottle-necked stretch.

Among the properties are at least 17 homes and as many as four commercial properties, DOTD officials told WBRZ Monday.

"That is what is currently projected, but the final design is not completed," a spokesperson said, adding that things could change.

Most of the homes are between either Washington Street and Dalrymple Drive or Perkins Road and Acadian Thruway, the Advocate newspaper reported.

The businesses include The Overpass Merchant, a restaurant under I-10 near the Perkins Road overpass and a convenience store, salon and barber shop.

WBRZ

100% completely and totally worth it.

I bet those guys are pissed. Although I am sure they will find a new location, it won't be the same.

They filmed a scene in Sex Lies and Videotape there. Soderbergh movie before he was famous.

I was hoping that could be spared. Maybe the freeway can go without a shoulder on that spot.

Don’t care about the convenience store or any of that other crap.

So just 2 dozen properties/owners stood in the way of widening the single greatest choke point of the main east west interstate in the USA FOR FORTY frickING YEARS.

At the open house a couple of years ago DOTD estimated only a few would be displaced. They must be going big (wider) now.

Yes, must happen.

So it took 30 years to get this done when all that was needed was to buy a few buildings?

Yeah that’s all it was. Nothing to do with the hundreds of millions in actual construction costs.

The stupidity on this sight is amazing.

Meh. No Zee Zee's, no care.

That area started losing its soul when all that crap replaced Perkins Road Hardware. Fire up the bulldozers, DOTD.

If they can get by with only a couple of dozen properties - most of those empty and useless houses - they should definitely widen that highway.

Shut your whore mouth Speedy. They can reduce the size of I-10 before they frick with Troys IMO. FWIW though, I am thinking they are talking about someplace back by Washington St. If it was Troy’s then it would be Ivar’s, the pharmacy and that dress shop as well. Don’t see them mentioned.

DOTD would have to raise the gas tax to cover the cost to remove all that unexpended ordnance from Troy's.

Neighborhood saved!!!
