Baton Rouge police: Man jumps off I-10 overpass after accident to avoid being hit by another car

LINK

A man jumped off an overpass to avoid being hit while checking his car for damage after crashing into the barrier Saturday afternoon, said Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely.

The man jumped off the I-10 West overpass near the I-110 split.

Depending on where he jumped, he's going to be in the hospital for a while. Would be nice if there were shoulders in that section.

That sucks. That section, especially eastbound, has got to be one of the worst interstate designs in the country. How on earth should an interstate that spans California to Florida go to one lane by design at the base of a giant bridge?

That section hasn't been updated since it was built in 1962.

The designer and his family should've been executed in 1960, then.

It should be noted that they tried to update that section but certain City Council members opined that eliminating the Washington St. exit was RACISS so they didn’t do it.

You willing to pay a higher gas tax to do such a thing?

If not, shut up.

The guy that designed that has long since died. The Baton Rouge metro area has more than doubled in size since then. The nation's reliance on interstate trucking as grown ten fold.

It's a shitty design but a lot of people ignored it since then. It really should have been addressed 25 years ago.

It will cost about $300 million to widen the section between the bridge and College Drive, and that would have an immediate impact on regional traffic. The state claims not to have the money but still throws cash away on projects with much more local focus and far less greater impact. And they do it every year.

Or made to flag traffic there for the rest of their lives.

Grandpa was an stone-cold idiot, kids.

It's comical how this has been a problem for 40 years and NOTHING is ever done about it. It's like the state hates everyone that lives in the Baton Rouge area.

I’ve put a lot of thought into how to handle this scenario as I drive the same route daily. The trick is to keep your eyes upstream. When you see the first sign of trouble hop up on the railing then jump over the offending car back onto the interstate.

Widening would already be underway had JBE not found a way to divert the money earmarked from Congress to instead widen the stretch of interstate between the end of the basin bridgr and the Opelousas exit.

Where's all the Casino money going ?

Wasn't better schools and roads what they used as a platform to get them approved, then you drive through Shreveport.

I don't get this at all. That area isn't a major problem. Kick back to Angelle perhaps?

Wait are you serious??? I mean I really can't believe that money was appropriated for this and then not spent. It is unfathomable that they would divert from that. I guess it's going to take the city/state/governor being sued for wrongful death to get this fixed.

I had read that as well. I think Garrett Graves (R-Baton Rouge) had it written into a federal spending bill last year. The governor's office opted to widen a section in Breaux Bridge instead of correcting the I-10/I-110 interchange.

Pathetic.

I shite you not. The widening is already underway in that area. If there is one thing the entire legislature can agree on, it is f$&k BR.

And no, that area is never a problem. The only time there is traffic there is when there is an accident on the Basin Bridge which is NOT being widened or improved in any way under this plan. It’s a complete waste of money and only being done for political reasons.

My guess is it was done because Kil Holden and Garrett Graves were bragging about securing the money, and JBE didn’t want political rivals to get any credit.

The area in Breaux Bridge can use new pavement, but them ignoring Baton Rouge for federal dollars earmarked for Baton Rouge by a congressman from Baton Rouge is typical JBE bullshite.
