The fact that the alleviation of the bridge traffic wasn't priority one (in fact funds diverted to other projects) is an example of why the state is in the crapper and why it is hard to envision moving back. Personal politics or idiocy (not sure which is worse) is putting lives in danger. I 10 (one of the most busy interstates in the country) going down to one lane in downtown after a bridge is a death trap and begging to have dangerous outcomes. It truly is beyond comprehension how someone can let that continue when there was money to fix it.

The $60 million federal grant for widening I-10 allowed the state to shift money that had been set aside for the project to other work, including a new Washington Street I-10 exit in Baton Rouge near the Mississippi River Bridge – a notorious choke point in the city.

So the Governor's office "rerouted" a $300 million dollar earmark for Baton Rouge to fix I-10 to Breaux Bridge, then allocated a $60 million grant for a new freeway exit at Terrace Ave.

fricking insane. JBE sucks.

To those of you more educated on state politics than I, what are the chances JBE hits the perfect storm again and gets a second term? He's essentially guaranteed to be out next election, right?

If only that was the case.

Drive though San Antonio - it is a cluster if you try to stay on I-10 - either direction. 1 lane, and if you blink, you will miss it.

Insane.

Wrapping up my lunch at Thai Kitchen (mmmm, Thai Buffet), I noticed a group in the back of the room loudly discussing this very topic, using the same language as some of these posts. Hello fellow TD diners, yeah that was me trying to figure out who was who...

I don't know if it is still true, but as far as the approach of I-10W to the bridge, that was the most dangerous interstate highway bridge approach in the United States for many, many years - multiple examples of trucks losing it in that curve, partially/fully going over the side, accidents because it's a blind curve, etc.

Heck, one cool, dark Saturday morning 20+ years ago, a BR cop put himself between me and danger, almost sacrificing himself to save me on that approach.

Something should at least be attempted to make that area safer with shoulders, barriers, etc.

I remember a few years ago some kids were driving around and one was sleeping in the back seat. They tried to prank him and stopped the car and acted like it was on fire or something.. the dude woke up and was disoriented and ran right off the fricking overpass

Basin Bridge which is NOT being widened or improved in any way under this plan.

Which basically means that I-10 gets three lanes from Lafayette to Henderson, only to have all three lanes bottleneck on a bridge that people have to drop speed for.

Basically, this project will only lead to more accidents around the entrance to the Basin Bridge in Henderson.

Well at least the money won't be spent in Baton Rouge and that pesky republican congressman that got it for us won't get credit for it.

JBE logic.

The really insane thing is there's nothing to fix from 1-10 Basin to lafayette. There's never enough traffic back up to need 3 lanes and I've been driving it for 35 years.

It definitely could use an overlay to smooth it out. I don't think they need 6 lanes there yet, but it would be nice if I-10 was 6 lanes wide between LA 1 in Port Allen all the way to Lake Charles. Not sure if they can do that with the Basin bridge but it would be very nice if they could.

Supposedly it would cost $350 million to widen I-10 to 8 lanes between the Mississippi River Bridge to College Drive. The studies that were published actually said it would have a more immediate impact on regional traffic than a loop.

Again, that much needed project is in Baton Rouge, so the state (and especially this governor) doesn't give a shite.

What you are describing is the westbound ramp from I-10 to the bridge. Work was done several years ago to remediate the issue.

they put a much bigger wall to catch the cars that would otherwise fall over. They really need to consider re-banking it and adding an inside shoulder.
