That contract would be nullified in court as being signed under duress

There has to be more to the story IMO
No sane employer would think it’s okay to make an employee pay back money from a robbery unless the employee was involved in the robbery and/or employee’s gross misconduct/negligence led to the robbery.
And no sane employee would ever sign and agree that they’d pay the money back.

Wait? Did the bartender seriously sign that?
Unless he lives in a rural area, it shouldn't be very difficult at all to find another bartending job. Maybe 1 where you are less likely to be robbed at gunpoint as well.

He had to have been in on the robbery and they know it and he has been informed they know it...
This is pay us back or we prosecute language.

Bars and restaurants are kind of like the coaching profession, once you've been in it you can always get another job. Something is off about this story

Back in the 80s I worked at a fast food restaurant. They didn't have a safe in the store so the closing manager had to drop the money in a night deposit box. One night I was robbed. The guy was an ex-employee. I told the police who ha was and they arrested him an hour later. He had spent $18.10 on gas, beer and cigs. My next bonus check was short $9.05 and the other managers check had the same amount deducted
Whelp, at a time of your choosing, you would be justified to reimburse yourself either monetarily, materially, or with unofficial paid “leave”.

They hit him with the ole shock and awe and he didn't realize until later they had pulled a fast one.
Apparently it still took him awhile. He was only paying $300 a paycheck to cover a balance over $3,900. That means he paid it out over 13/14 pay periods since the document says paid in full.

That’s from December 2020 so it’s been paid back. Why did he come out about this now after he paid it back? How much of a functioning retard are we dealing with here.

Apparently he's a career bartender, so...

message from the employee:
And apparently they fired him anyway after he made his last payment but I'm not sure, this all comes from reddit and another forum I post on so just take it for what you will. If true though, it's really shitty

He’s an idiot for actually paying it back. Even back in December 2020, places were hiring all over.

If the deduction lowered his pay below the minimum wage threshold (though he is probably a tipped employee which makes it likely that he receives a minimum wage even with the deduction), then the employer is violating the FLSA.
Even in cases where the employee took the money, an employer can only deduct below minimum wage if the employee has been convicted of the theft).

Do bars often have an HR person?

Sounds like there were multiple locations. If they have a large staff over multiple locations, probably.

Yep, and if they fire him now it will be considered retaliatory.
